Description Recently, I saw 's animation:

I thought to myself, hey, I wanna do my own intro animation, too!

So I fired-up Flash, and did this animation within 9 days flat.

I admit, one of my 2015 new year's resolutions is to try to improve my animation skills. I plan to do more 2D animations within this Year of the Sheep/Goat/Ram. I felt that artists who can animate tend to be more popular and attract more fans than artists who can't. But that's just me. It's just based from what I've observed.

Anyone can animate. It's just that animation takes lots of time and patience. Patience... is something I don't have, really. That's one of my greatest weaknesses: I simply have very little patience. I'm the sort of person who wishes to see something done RIGHT NOW. It's this lack of patience which has been keeping me from being able to animate well. Well, I intend to try to change that.

I guess, I also did this animation out of severe envy from seeing animators like RuDragon able to animate very well.

Hopefully, we'll see a little more increase of animation-based submissions in my gallery in the future.

Thanks! Yep, I did that so that the logo stands out well, in contrast to the animation before it with white background.

I certainly do hope I find some more animation-based submissions from you. ^_^

I've had a lot of experience with animation in my life; took some classes, bought my own copy of Flash, bought a ton of books regarding the subject, studied movies, practiced, etc. And yes, it is extremely time-consuming. But it turns out really nice in the end. (And yes, this is also speaking as someone who doesn't have as much patience as a professional animator would have.)

Thanks! I hope so, too.

I've always loved animation and I've been doing animations since I was a child (they were mostly stick animations on that time). Advances in technology make it easier to animate and also keep the animation costs down, too. This allows me to utilize time-saving "cheats" such as simply copy and paste parts of the animation and reshape the lines.

I like the aesthetic of traditional 2D animation. Believe it or not, except for the final transition to the logo at the end, no symbols were used. That way, animation is more free-form and it allows me to make those ears and tail animations look more graceful, because every frame is a separate vector drawing.

I admit that Flash does have its weaknesses since it wasn't really originally meant to be used as an animation tool in the first place. Toon Boom is much better in that regard. However, I've seen TV shows and even entire movies animated using Flash. (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is, in fact, animated using Flash.)

How did you do the shading? Whenever I've tried that, it's a nightmare for me. Drawing over the frame with the Pen tool, adding shading, and then going back and deleting the line.

MarwanGreenCritter In reply to wisp2007 [2015-01-21 06:31:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, shading in Flash is a nightmare. And of course, I did that technique you've mentioned every single time I color a pic and submit it in my gallery. I draw the line first where I want to add that shading, add that shading itself, and then I delete that line. Since it's difficult to adjust the shading afterwards without screwing-up the lineart, I had to be very careful and be precise with the placement of my shadings.

Maybe it's not that difficult as you may think. It's hard to put into words, but I'll do the best I can:
If I was trying to shade a Flash-made picture, I would duplicate the line-art layer and then work on the bottom layer while locking the top one. Then I would shade with the Pencil tool, making sure that the line I use to determine shading is the same color as the area I want to shade. For example, if something was red and I wanted to shade it, I'd use a darker red line for shading boundary. The best part is if you start the shading and ending line right at the lineart, it won't mess things up because the original lineart has already been duplicated and locked.

This can adapt to animation as well, if you convert the finished animation's lineart to a Symbol, duplicate the Symbol, place it below the lineart Symbol, and use that to do coloring and shading. Because your Lineart symbol is transparent, it won't be affected as much.

I'm sorry if this is all sounding foreign to you, but I discovered this technique as a result of hours of deleting lines to create a cel-shaded look in Flash almost putting me off from making pictures in Flash altogether. I'm no good at telling people how to do such things, though. I wish I could show you.

MarwanGreenCritter In reply to wisp2007 [2015-01-21 20:05:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, back during my much earlier and inexperienced years of drawing within Flash, once, there's one movie I did which utilizes an alternate technique of shading: via the use of Mask layer. The entire animation of the character is placed inside a symbol, and this symbol is then copied into another layer. The top instance of the symbol acts as the shading; it's given a darker brightness color effect (I usually set to 25% dark). Then, a mask layer is created on top of these layers, and the layer that's intended to be the shading is attached to this mask layer. Then I simply draw-in within the mask the areas that is intended to be shaded. The mask ensures that only the areas I've drawn will show through, in this case the shadows. The advantage of this technique is that the drawing is left intact, and I can freely adjust the shading.

I don't do that anymore because of its disadvantage of this technique: suppose that only part of the character's body needs to move, such as his arm, while the rest of his body remains still. This necessitates duplicating the entire shading -- head, body, everything -- just to facilitate just the ever-changing shading of the arm as it moves. This makes later adjusting the shading of the body a hassle, because I'll need to copy and paste that part of the corrected shading over and over again. A solution would be to create yet another mask layer, and duplicate the animation symbol yet again just for the arm.

Absolute terrific job on this, the animation is pretty much seamless, and it represents both the cartoony and serious sides of both your creations and your personality very well.

Thanks! Yeah, read my reply to comments.deviantart.com/1/5083… The pose and serious expression also helps to make it seamlessly fade to the logo in the end.

Heh, the exact same comment in FA, so I think I'll just copy-and-paste (so even DA members can see it, too)...

Thanks!

Can't say how many... Every frame is a composite of several layers together, each animated independently from each other. With the base framerate of 24fps, animation framerate is varied between 12fps (animating on "twos") to 8fps (animating on "threes", similar to Japanese anime). The Flash project itself spans 216 frames in total in the timeline. The actual animation itself, I'd say around 40 frames.

However, if you mean how many frames I've prepared in advance, believe or not, there were only 9 frames! It's easier to prepare keyframes in advance. Then I simply fill in the animation gaps later.

Obviously, I was heavily influenced by Japanese anime. It has been my goal to reproduce this "anime" look, with a few of my personal touches as well.

Again, thanks!

Thanks! Well, I wanted to animate something that goes along with my logo, hence the final pose and mysterious dramatic wind that helps to position my ears to form the logo in the end.

I really had fun animating those ears and tail. Especially the ears. After all, I really do have a thing for floppy ears. Those ears and tail are also the most difficult to animate with, but I think the effort is well worth it.

There's actually a hidden meaning behind suddenly changing from all happy and giddy, to being serious-faced, in the end... The first half of the animation is me being my childhood self. After all, this is my true personality, and how I'd rather want to be if society isn't so cruel. The second half, when I go serious-faced, is me acting the way society expects me to. I want to be taken seriously, to be recognized. Hence, I'm forced to act like an adult if I ever want to have a chance at being taken seriously. After all, who would want to listen to a child?

But anyway, once again, thanks! I'm just glad that this animation came out nice in the end.

ah yes it is very mysterious to know what would happen next
I could see the way you made on floppy ears and tail way difficult than it look o-o
you managed to pull it off so very well done on that one your effort had worth it :3
tbh I've enjoyed watching your animation.

ahhh that's interesting when you mentioned about you're being happy/adorable
then the next thing you get serious since you're adult xD I actually get your point
that's very creative of you to make in this way!

you're welcome! Take your time on something you want to draw
and I know you'll do amazing! ^_^ i'll be here to support you along the way c:
