If a sponge in the ocean feels distressed and realizes the conditions around it are changing and it's going to die, as a last chance resort it expells all its gametes (eggs/sperm) before it kicks the bucket.Learn something new every day!

Jellyfish do release egg and sperm like this, but I don't think they'll suddenly expell them if they sense something is wrong like sponges do XD

If they know they're going to die, they get all their babies out so that their offspring can survive. Because they aren't going to be promoting the life of their babies if they're dead.
