Description
So here it is. The time has finally arrived, many moons late. My take on the Nintendo Switch is finally here. And...well, if the image hasn't already tipped you off, I'm not too impressed. Well...sort of. Let's do this.1. The General Idea
Now to kick things off, I have to say, I LOVE the general idea of the Nintendo Switch. It sounds like the sort of thing I really appreciate and understand. From what I can gather and what I've seen, it's sort of a cross between a 3DS, a home console and a smartphone. Indeed with its touchscreen I have sort of seen the Switch as Nintendo's take on a gaming tablet. Play it at home, play it on the go, play it in the bathroom, play it in the morgue...okay maybe not that last one but still. I love the idea. True portability. Something that would benefit a lot of people in different, multiple ways. So the idea is pretty cool...what about the execution?
2. The Hardware
While I have my problems with Nintendo, I will happily let it be known I believe they make fantastic hardware. In an industry where PC is king of the crop and most other consoles are too busy with multimedia features and buzzwordy graphical bullshit where Minecraft outsells it all, Nintendo just does what it does best; make hardware that plays the games you want to play. It's something it's done masterfully for years - I loved my Game Boy Advance back in the day and I love my 3DS now - but it's fairly safe to say they've lost their touch in recent years. The Wii was frankly awful; an overhyped, underpowered, shovelware-saturated little white box of "family-friendly" contempt, and the Wii U was better and had better games for it, but sold poorly and had a lot of gimmicky, unneeded features that solidified its not-quite-failure-but-not-quite-success. As for the Switch...well.
It seems well-made and well-designed from a standpoint, but I think the main problem is the general build quality. The controls feel and look extremely cramped even though they follow the same sort of design logistics that the GBA and 3DS used, and overall it has all the same sort of features as the 3DS with its gyroscopes and touch screen. But I think the main problem with the hardware isn't the processing power - not scaled properly, works better outside the dock than in it and framerate tends to chug - but more the fact that, from what I've heard, the damn thing is so fragile. Hardware AND Firmware. The screen is infamously soft and scratches if you so much as blow on it, and is gashed up to the point of uselessness if you stick it in the dock like you're supposed to, and the firmware apparently has outright bricked the thing in the past. Apparently. It seems like a few more design choices were sort of needed, but if this is anything like the DS/DSi/3DS/3DSXL/New 3DS thing, this will be fixed in time. But at the moment, it ain't exactly a great showing.
That said, I like how the side controllers can attach to a clip of sorts and people have made the Switch look like a dog as a result of its shape. That's pretty adorable.
3. The Launch-Day Software
You know, it's funny. I had opinions on all of the Switch launch titles...but I put this off so much I forgot what the launch titles even were. I've done some research and here is what I think of the eight games the Switch launched with.
4. Later and Upcoming Software
All few of them! Yes, I know there are a lot more coming out for it at around this time, and a game console should never be judged purely on its launch lineup, but...well, I don't particularly care for a lot of the more unusual games that Nintendo allows on its systems, 'because they tend to be a little TOO gimmicky. Which is fine, until the gimmicks take over and make the game uncontrollable...Star Fox Zero. Let me put it this way, you probably won't see something like Undertale on this, at least for right now. For the moment, I'll list the upcoming and later-released games that, for whatever reason, caught my attention.
While I'm at it, I'll also go over a few games that haven't been officially announced but might just turn up anyway;
4. The Main Problem
Alright, people. Time to get to the biggest problem I have with the Switch. Well, actually two problems but we'll get to that when we do. First up...The Price. Holy Shit this thing is expensive in every single way possible to the point I don't understand how anyone at Nintendo found it logical. I mean, £280 for the main thing itself? Fine. That at least hints at decent hardware (though this being the games industry I very much doubt that such a thing is the case), but around £60 for the pro controller? £50 for ONE HALF of the controls? Fuggin' £50 for every game in its library? And a fucking online subscription fee?! Come on Nintendo, you're (well, you WERE) better than this! It's not even as good as what Microsoft and Sony gate off. How do you make a online subscription service WORSE than the already cancerous competition!?
And that leads me to the main problem I have with the Switch; Nintendo Themselves. It goes without saying that they are a far, FAR cry from what they were only a few years ago. A lot of publishers haven't exactly endeared themselves to us, to put it lightly. Modern Capcom doesn't exactly know what its customers want. Modern SEGA are clueless and incompetent. Modern Sony abandons hardware like a disposable razor and take anyone who looks at them funny to court. Modern Konami is...well, Konami. But Modern Nintendo is infamous for being arrogant, sleezy and holding contempt to its Western userbase. Be it taking down every fangame they come across with ferocious, borderline rabid sense of determination, to changing perfectly fine elements of certain Mario games, ruining their other games with boneheaded decisions and then blaming the customers for not marching in lockstep, that whole NES Mini debacle and generally showing a sociopathic hatred of the Western market because it doesn't work exactly like the Eastern market and they can't be bothered to adapt. They really do seem think that they can change pretty much anything they want and everyone will take it gladly and blindly. Which is arrogent at best and borderline hopeless at worst. With this in mind, and with the rest of the problem detailed above, how do we know that the Switch won't fall under this spiteful scrutiny. They've already shown that they don't know how to business in the Western world, and all their attempts to copy some of the aspects (always the awful aspects too, like subscription-based online features and high-price addons) have failed, miserably. From what I have been able to gather, Nintendo doesn't understand why we hate the things they do - and they don't care. As long as the Pachinko-playing gamers of the Land of the Rising Run are happy, Nintendo is happy. Fuck everyone else.
Conclusion
So overall, despite the fact that I love the idea for the Switch, and I like some of the games for the Switch, I'm going to go ahead and skip it. The absurd price tags all around aside, the console just hasn't proven itself yet, the hardware is a touch sloppy, the programs and setups around it are as outdated as they can get and I simply have no trust in Nintendo in that they'll do the right thing for the console, whatever that may be. Plus, I simply don't NEED another console at the moment. Ever since I sussed out that paying for the "privilege" of playing on awful, outdated console servers was a stupid idea, I've been playing PC games ever since and it's been smooth sailing from there. As for handheld items, I still have my 3DS and my smartphone can handle all the other types of games I would want to play on the go. Not well, owing to no physical controls, but still. For the Switch to be seen as worth the purchase in my eyes, it would need a lot of good games, a lot of good value and a lot of good faith in it. And I just don't see any of that stuff, at least at the moment, to justify that £280 price tag.
If you want another, more concise review of the Nintendo Switch, by the way, I would suggest the review of the Switch by Stuart Ashen. He brings up a lot of good points, goes over as much as he can and he didn't have his Switch (and copy of Breath of the Wild) supplied by Nintendo. A lot of other people I've seen review the Switch have, and I can just feel Nintendo aiming a DCMA takedown to their heads like a gun off-screen, waiting to pounce if they don't give Breath of the Wild an ∞/10. Plus the fact those who DID get the stuff via Nintendo tend to be Nintendo fanboys that don't really criticize Nintendo for...anything. Just a little bit dodgy. BIG ASS UPDATE (2019)
Well it's been years on from this...I now own a Switch. I play Splatoon 2 every day. SO LET IT BE KNOWN THIS PIECE DOES NOT REFLECT MY CURRENT OPINIONS ON THE CONSOLE still overpriced, though

Yes, indeed, a lot of my criticisms were quelled or reverted. Hell I kind of want a Switch myself now. Still too expensive, though. And just because it's a success doesn't mean all of its problems go away. Voice chat through a phone app, for example.
I would rather you didn't rub it in, either. Looks unprofessional on your end.

It is indeed! I'm kind of surprised that it took as long as it did. I thought it'd be a launch title or something.

Considering that I want Nintendo to NOT screw over people who make online content or people who pay through the nose for their products, I would argue that such a statememt is technically correct, albiet a bit strawman.

Finally someone who seems to have the exact same mindset on the console and Nintendo itself, than I do. I also think the Switch is an awesome hardware concept and I was so looking forward to it. But as you perfectly say, the main problem behind it, is the maker. Few years back, I loved Nintendo and I would buy their shit just for feeling good to support them. With how they have developped over time, I basically don't give a shit about them, because obviously they don't give a shit about their customers. May it only be because they keep putting out new franchises, which is not bad, but not caring to put out their old franchises, which people love. No matter how loud people are yelling for it, there is no way the desires of the customers make it over to Japan. Well, in rare cases we get something like "Star Fox Zero". A gigantic fail, because the game suffers from 2 major elements:
1) It's basically a WAR game, but it's being designed to suit every damn little child, so the game seems simply rediculous to me. Fuck them.
2) Everybody can tell, the forced motion controls. I could nevermind fact 1, but this here is a deal breaker. The controls alone make the game a lot worse, from a really good title, to something slightely above mediocre.
Why so? Because Nintendo insisted in having their so cool motion hardware shown at the point, where the console was already clear to be no success. Oh yeah, and double screen bullshit which was rarely ever used, but then HAD to be used in such an awful way. Thank you, idiots.
So yes, Nintendo is damn arrogant in never listening to their fans and customers, there is seriously no way you can contact the actual leaders and makers in Japan, absolutely no way. Not even Nintendo America or Nintendo Europe can clearly communicate with them. It's basically a one way line, info and commands coming from Japan to everywhere else, but nothing gets back to Japan for making them know about anything. Great way of running a company. Along with it go their way way awful decisions. Like GBA download games only being available on the STATIONARY console? You kidding me? And what games are actually available also often is only a bad joke.
It's not like I hate Nintendo, but they have lost me as a fan of them and so far, I am not interested in buying a Switch, even though the price is not a problem. But Zelda alone is no reason for me to get it. If Nintendo will still not deliver some needed games in this generation, such as a GOOD Metroid game, F-Zero, good Star Fox game and many other franchises, they will go down. And I wouldn't mind. I am not getting their shit for something like........... Arms........ I really don't like the game, especially for it's weird and childish design. Today Nintendo produces even more kiddie-like content than in the past, when today people blame Nintendo for only delivering kids content, it's all legitimate. Splatoon is a damn nice game, but also...... taking every aspects of seriousness from the games' design and having it suitable for kids, I am slowly getting sick.
Buddy of mine had the Switch and sold it again, because he also saw no point in having it now. I may get the console once there would be actual interesting content like the mentioned franchises or a new Smash Bros. (with a not so rediculous online mode). But currently, I have no idea why this console is sold out everywhere. However, I will follow Nintendo's moves, and it can still happen, that they start doing things better. But I doubt it.
By the way, as a fan of Nintendo few years back, I just got me the ultimate Game Boy Advance. A modded version with new case and the 101 GBA SP backlit screen, together with a personalized EZ Flash IV cartridge in it, this is the ultimate 2D gaming platform. This little gadget offers lots of more fun than the Switch might do in it's whole life cycle.

Well, I was very much surprised, but I do think Nintendo does it, because they need to realize, that they would die if they totally neglected the wishes of the customers. They usually want to do what they feel for, experimenting with new stuff and putting out something like Arms. I don't like the game, though it can work awesomely, like with Splatoon. Great concept there. But still, no matter if new creations are good or not, they need to feed the customers with the great franchises Nintendo used to deliver in the past. They have to, otherwise it's no miracle that their stuff doesn't sell (that Switch started with major sales doesn't mean anything, if they don't deliver the stuff people want on the console).
Anyway, to keep it short: Metroid Prime 4 was the first announcement, that actually gave me the thought "I need to get the console at some point". A good start to go with, now if Nintendo would deliver good content for all of their other beloved franchises (like there is a serious need for a proper new F-Zero), that would be the real deal. If there is great Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero, Smash Bros., und good games from third party, there would be nothing people (like me) could keep arguing about. That would be awesome. But so far, I am staying sceptical. Because of future decisions of Nintendo, and the fact, that we don't know anything about Prime 4 yet. Who delevops it? There is no guarantee it's gonna be a good game. I am taking nothing for granted so far.

Yes I've also tried out emulators for the smartphone. But it's no fun to me playing them without actual buttons. I like to have a classic control unit. The GBA might be a little small nowadays so that it feels kinda awkward when you play with it too long, but there extra save functions in that flash card are very handy.

Yeah, virtual controls....*shudder* I really only play Pokemon this way. 'Cause the actual Pokemon games on smartphone aren't good and...well, I probably don't want a proper Pokemon game designed for the smartphone. I can only imagine how awful that would be...

Well it definately could be awesome, if Nintendo wouldn't be so stupid. And sure there would be so many developers, who would put out a freaking awesome phone game, if they had the rights to do this, but even thought Nintendo doesn't produce many of it's awesome franchises these days, they stick to them like a dog to his chew bone.
But yeah, Pokemon has very simple controls with usually little real time interaction, so that works good with a phone I think. Something like Smash Bros. would be impossible with screen controls.

I would...disagree. RPG's could work on smartphone, hell with stuff like GBA emulators they do, but...well, ever heard of the Tales of Phantasia kerfuffle? Or hell, even Pocket Morty for a more recent example.

I didn't say common games suck all being played on smartphone It's really a matter of controls, which is why i said, SSB would not work at all. RPGs and anything with less fast real time controls can work fine on smartphones to control. I still wouldn't like it.
What I woumd enjoy like mad would be a modern and better kond of the Nokia NGage. That was a gaming phone with physical controls. The whole concept was lacking lots of logic, but the basic idea is great. If such a phone came out, with attachable control units just like on Switch and that thing would run well, Nintendo would be so screwed, because most smartphones can easily compete with the Switch. So having physical controls on a smartphone would make it the better Switch, being a whole multimedia and communication device as well. Such a thing would be sick, but I doubt it will come, because why spend money in creating such a gadget for high class games, when the common smartphone user is happy with cheap little idiot games, which make their creators rich? Though it would be already cool to have versions of console games on a phone. Ah, there are plenty of dreams about awesome gaming machines.......

I'm OK with having breakable weapons in Breath of the Wild.
At least Gold Mario doesn't have his own character slot. He's just a different color of Metal Mario, like with all the multicolored Yoshis... Still a kind of stupid choice.
The price point is actually about as low as they can go and still make a profit. Other consoles tend to sell at a loss at first, relying on first-party game sales for profit, but the Switch is sold for slightly more than it costs to build. I was a bit iffy about the price, too, but at least there's a logical reason... At least in the US and Japan. For whatever reason you'd have to pay almost as much as I did for both the console and Breath of the Wild, just for the console itself. That just doesn't make sense to me.
Online subscription fee makes sense, too. Servers cost money. And Nintendo's probably going to be charging 30-50% of what Microsoft and Sony do for theirs.
... It's by no means perfect. I still love the idea and have had a lot of fun with the console. Even if I think it's a bit expensive, I understand why it is, and I'm glad I have it.

Hmm interesting review! I haven't bought a Switch yet and I actually opted to buy my first 2DS a few months ago instead of investing $300 in a Switch, lol. I was actually thinking that the Wii U is looking pretty good now with the new LoZ game plus its full roster. What do you think?

The Wii U has a roster of great games for it, I won't deny that. But I just don't need another console. All the games I want to play on console, I can play on PC or 3DS. Which I suppose is a shame, 'cause that means no Mario Kart 8 or Smash 4 Wii U, but for the most part I'm fine with what I have.
Also, speaking of the 2DS...we did NOT need a 2DSXL. Seriously, what's the point of it?
