Description
Narrator: "Taking a deep breath, Stoick leaned down and exhaled, 'My son....'"In one quick but gentle motion, Stoick picked up Hiccup and held him close to his face. Hiccup cooed with delight, wiggled his legs, and stretched out his arms as far as he could, trying to hug his father's whole head. Stoick chuckled at his son's determination and nuzzled into Hiccup's surprisingly strong embrace. 'Don't worry my son;' he said, 'I'll watch over you.'
"And with that promise spoken, Stoick quietly reflected on the sadness and joy of the day as Hiccup nestled into his beard and fell asleep."

(Daunting...Yes I will stick with the word daunting...Stoic's beard is ever so daunting to draw let alone color/shade...And in the movie his beard goes from a bright red in the direct sunlight to a almost plum colored in that early morning scene right after Hiccup knocked over the HUGE LAMP and then Stoic says "You are many things Hiccup...But a dragon killer is not one of them..." So...Sometimes I never know what colors to fuze into his beard to make flow with the light.
I do love how you drew each strand of hair and had each strand with it's particular shade, and shadow casted from the gleaming fire dancing behind Stoic... Brilliant sir!! )

(Oh my yes! The lighting in the movie was beautifully rendered for each setting that all of the colors of all the characters changed, which made getting an average color of anything in "average light" a headache for me and many people. Even the official character posters from Dreamworks don't quite match the movie (think the colors of Astrid's shirt) ... but oh well, we just improvise and go on!

(Me too! I am starting to get really really REALLY nervous as I keep finding out more opinions from others as to what they think the second movie will be about....Oh man..... I can't wait for it...But I'm cringing inwardly cause I don't wanna see anything happen to either Stoic or Hiccup...Or Toothless for that matter... I guess we can't always get what we want thought... *doleful sigh* Such is life *looks up, half smiling* )

That's wonderful! That is one of the highest compliments I can imagine giving an artist!
(yelling down the hall): "Hiccup, take Skunkoon a tissue!"

Poor Stoick, his beard is rather intimidating. I kept getting lost in it while I was working on this series. It even became a running joke with my sister. When she'd call me, she'd open with, "So are you still in Stoick's beard?" Yup.

ch4rms In reply to masterrohan [2011-01-28 23:03:19 +0000 UTC]
bahaha, I so would get lost in Stoick's beard. I'd need a map or a guide to get out >.<
I wonder if baby Hiccup has ever fallen into Stoick's beard and gotten lost?

masterrohan In reply to ch4rms [2011-01-28 23:14:51 +0000 UTC]
Hehehe, that question came up in several comments on the picture and I think so! My sister watched an anime series where a squirrel lived in the hairdo of the mom in the show. I thought, "What if Hiccup lived in Stoick's beard and randomly "popped out" every now and then to startle people!
