Description
A wasp on a window glass looking for ways to escape out. Or just chillin'... Created entirely by me for the Yafaray Annual Competition 2011 - Insectum. I spent a lot of time on modeling, rigging, texture paining & material creation, because I wanted to deliver a photoreal result. It payed off, since this was the winning entry... You can appreciate all the entires for this competition here: [link]Modeled in Blender, texture paining & postpro in GIMP, rendered with Yafaray, tonemapping with Luminance HDR.
Although I got constant wasp intrusions in my room, no wasps were harmed in the process of creation of this render.
EDIT1: I never thought I would have to write this, but just to clarify: this is a 3D render, not a photo
You can see the clay render of the model here: [link]

Amazing, it looks great ! I was actually thinking of making a bee (hive) in 3d and this is certainly inspiring.
I use a totally different toolset though (C4d, Zbrush, PS) and may have to look into those apps you mentioned. There are so many 3d apps these days. (I'm certainly interested in one that can do some painless rigging and posing).

Go for it. What software you use doesn't matter much, as long as you put the effort in the work. If you already own & know C4D than use that. I'm sorry I can't offer any suggestions about rigging & posing tools (other than a biased; Blender is great!!111one! )), because I don't know other 3D apps.
Thanks!

"What Do You Mean It's Not Real?"
Seriously...I did not know you could do this in Blender and Gimp...and, yes, accessories.

IMO, I don't like the Vespula in frame and the frame itself that much... but your 3D primary object's great! Amazing believable and realistic (without frame)

About the frame; for me it's important to give credit to the software used, since I'm using mostly FOSS programs I didn't pay a penny for. Usually a frame is needed to put such informations in. But yes, a work looks more classy without frames. I'll keep in mind
Thank you!

Yes, I see. I admit that the 1st time I saw your works. Totally understandable. You can live with Open-source software, and actually you done great works by them. GIMP, Blender3D and GPU render engine, etc...
Just mentioned it 'coz the font/typo or design of frame looks quite disintegrated to subject image. But that's just master of taste. You create it and you can put whatever u feel nice

Thank you guys for your nice comments! Since Yafaray atm doesn't support SSS, the render is a bit less realistic then it could be. The legs are the ones that stand out most as artificial (SSS would help a lot there).
@Keelty, most of those buggers will leave you alone, if you leave them alone (of course most of the times we unknowingly mess with their living space). The only thing that changes between them is the radius at which they will still tolerate your presence. Bees re nice, wasps are not bad unless you rally walk into their nest, hornets are the most aggressive. I have a milder allergic reaction to their sting, so one more reason to avoid them, hehe.
Yes, its supposed to be a yellow jacket. Thanks!

At first I thought this was a photo...then I read the description and my jaw nearly dropped. This is some nice work you have posted and congratulations for winning!
Wasps, bees, hornets, and any other of those buzzing devils with stringers or painful jaws, on the other hand...scare me. Out of all of the things in the world, I'm afraid of these buggers; alongside elevators and escalators. ffffffuuuu- So yeah, despite my loathing for these wicked critters, this is very well done and it captures the yellow jacket(?) quite well.

Excellent piece of work its very realistic, insects make such good creative design subjects being like little robots.

Yep! Insects with their rigid joints are easier to rig, though you usually have to deal with much more limbs than in a humanoid
Thanks!
