Description
A wasp on a window glass looking for ways to escape out. Or just chillin'... Created entirely by me for the Yafaray Annual Competition 2011 - Insectum. I spent a lot of time on modeling, rigging, texture paining & material creation, because I wanted to deliver a photoreal result. It payed off, since this was the winning entry... You can appreciate all the entires for this competition here: [link]Modeled in Blender, texture paining & postpro in GIMP, rendered with Yafaray, tonemapping with Luminance HDR.
Although I got constant wasp intrusions in my room, no wasps were harmed in the process of creation of this render.

Yes, I was quite thorough. It took me several hours only to grab the reference pictures and study the anatomy. In the process I also learned a thing or two about wasps, that I didn't know before - like that they have 3 more eyes on the back called ocelli
Bees are totally cute, but spiders give me shivers, though I'm not phobic about them

You have some skills, and patience. How long did this take to render, and did you use a render farm or just one computer?

Rendering was actually very fast, around 4 hours IIRC, on my previous PC rig: 2 core Duo. Yafaray (the render engine I used) is quite fast if you set it right.

This creeps me out.. (nah don't mind me, I have a thing against insects)
It's like it can fit my whole palm.. eeek
Only means that it looks so real! It's like a real wasp taken on a super high-specs camera O.O
I love the textures and most of all the transparent wings! oohlala

The wings material was the most difficult material to create. Lots of texture tweaking & re-rendering, to finally make it right.
