wow, this really has something to it...something unbelievably unusual and so obvious at the same time...
it's rare to come across a self portriat as great as this...i wish people could be subtle more often

something about this unsettles me. i dont know if its whether i cant see the face or body, but can feel there is someone there, or the fact there is wild hair sticking out, but no head on show.
great picture though

c'est vraiment tres bo....atmosphere vraiment mystérieuse, ombre ambigüe et sybilline, les quelques cheveux qui semblent naitre de l'obscurité sont vraiment bien
une photo tres jolie

ok, i like it, BUT

even though i'm a fan, i can't see how this is getting 9 favs :s

Nice shot, but you've got better pieces in your gallery.

Still a fan, just being honest...

This deserves the favorites it got, jinx. First of all, this is unlike her usual stuff so give her some room for experimentation and second of all, the shot's just so clear, so original, and so nicely lit that I can't really find it at fault for anything. And the hair is awesome. What exactly did you dislike about it?

i'm not here to tell someone they got bad taste. All i'm saying is, it's lacking in something special....

The work i've seen by mathilda has always been raw, honest AND full of nuances and subtile genious.

I'm not getting any of the above on this one...

It's like it's just a photo taken into the light, nothing more......

Again, i LOVE her work, honestly, but i think this does not live up to the standards

I saw it more as a study in light and composition. I tend to try and judge pieces by what they are, not what they aren't. I will agree, this one does not produce an emotional reaction-- it does not inspire to think a new thought-- so it lacks some of the things I enjoy about art... but I think the whole point of the thing, the reason we do this, cannot be summed up with a checklist you move down, searching for criteria. I love putting my eye on photographs like this and feeling the flow of the contrast, the color, the tone. Maybe it's too abstract, too removed from the subject matter, but I enjoy that kind of thing. And in general I think it pointless to argue about what art needs, or what is required to make something look good, because it's all been done well. That's not an argument against criticism in general, as it could be-- it is an argument in favor of critiquing things based on what you like and don't like that's in the piece, instead of looking at what you like or want that it doesn't have. Have I run far enough afield? I think I'm done.

In fact, I feel the black band devoid of 'subtleties' makes the entire frame an extremely interesting study…
What seems to be a straight forward view from a window suddenly reveals a human presence because of the stray hairs curling outwards! As a self portrait, I feel this ambiguity adds a lot to the impact.

As for the lost subtilities in the picture, maybe you could just save it as a PNG. For that size it could about 200 KB, which is not excessive when you want to keep important details.
The tones are very sweet, by the way.
