Yeah, the link had broken after I first posted it; I just updated the URL a few days ago. I'm glad you liked the story - I certainly felt good doing the commission, since I was happy to promote such a fine work.
As for the author, Merytneith, I think her Lexicon collection is everything. She used to hang out on alt.toys.transformers back in the day, but I don't think she really has an online presence anymore.

I read it on Lexicon, and they're in the middle of a server move right now and all of their fics have disappeared. Hopefully it's put back up after the move, or the author reposts it somewhere stable.

My God... I remember reading that story sometime back, and I also remember this scene being one of the best scenes in that entire piece, if not the best ever. I was really cheering for Blue when he did that, so I'm glad that I've found this piece.

Essentially, the story is an exploration of what Prowl was like before he became who he is now. It also offers an explanation as to why his personality is the way it is, and why he and Bluestreak share alt-modes - among other things, of course.

Hmm... It seems to have disappeared almost entirely from the Internet. The only copy of the fic I was aware of only existed on Lexicon, and I don't know if the author has posted elsewhere. I've tried Googling, but I haven't succeeded in finding another copy of it.

I can give you a brief rundown: First I lay in flat colors, which have generally little variation in them. I might make, say, one red darker than another one if I know that the first is definitely going to be in shadow. But for the most part I do my shading and highlights on separate layers set to Multiply or (in the case of highlights) sometimes Vivid Light. Drawing a light grey highlight and setting the layer to Vivid Light can really bring something nice out of the base color underneath.
The other main technique I used in this pic was shading with gradients - Lassoing, say, the panels on Sunstreaker's back and filling those shapes with linear gradients.
The effects - like the impact burst and the speed-lines - are pretty much just simple shapes with Outer Glows. I added some Noise to the sky... and I think that pretty much covers it.
