Description Helen is a friend of mine who lives a very long way away, so she came to stay with me for the weekend.

Among the hundreds of photos we made over the weekend (not including the hundreds more I've still yet to develop) this one stood out the most. Sometimes when I'm going through my contact sheets one frame will jump out at me and I'll have to print it right away. This was one of those.

The afternoon sun was behind her, and the way it lit up her face as it reached around her was brilliant.

Pentax 6x7, 105mm f2.4, Kodak Tri-X

... what you call "a picture jumping out at you" i call "resonates within you".... totally get it...

it resonates.

Hmmm...I don't know why I haven't noticed this shot before. But now I see it and I like it! I like the crop, almost a complete square. The title is what made me analyze the subject. She's looking down at her hands (look like she was picking at a leaf or something) as if she's telling you something and getting lost in her words. Maybe telling a memory from a long time ago. The photo doesn't look posed, and I like it.

Oh wow! Usually my interpretations aren't so dead-on. Well your feelings made the shot work.

That 105 f/2.4 must be a huge lens. I'm borrowing a Pentax Asahi 6x7 with the SMC Takumar 135 MACRO f/4. It's an ugly combo, but makes some gorgeous images.

Did you shoot these handheld because I've found unless I'm shooting at 1/1000th or 1/500th, there's no chance of getting it sharp enough, even though the negs are huge.

It's big, for sure! Everything about the Pentax 6x7 system is big! Ugly, but cool as hell!

And yeah, it was handheld. I've never actually put the 6x7 on a tripod before! This photo: [link] was shot at 1/30th and still turned out fine! Admittedly I was lying on the ground, so both elbows were resting on the floor.

I think this one was either 1/250th or 1/500th.

Remember that the extra length of the 135mm makes camera shake a little more likely. If you take your time with it and brace your arms you should be able to shoot handheld without any real problems. But then, I am quite used to shooting big heavy cameras handheld!
