HYPERION
A recent painting of a ship I designed when I was a teenage in the 1980s!
I had to make a large scale model for film that me and my friend David Hicks and some school friends were making in the Summer Holidays. The project went on for 2 years of VFX/model work. The facetted design was a practical consideration and the model was 6 feet in length. Balsa Wood sheets used in the main construction came in 3 foot lengths!
The film itself was heavily influenced by 'Star Trek The Motion Picture' and the Hyperion submarine featured a sort of bare metal, multi panelled look.. inspired by the glorious look of the Enterprise in that movie. The shape was influenced by the Firefox (from the Clint Eastwood action film) as well as (sub consciously) all of the Gerry Anderson hardware I had seen on TV growing up.
The boxy shape and parallel lines of the design made for some dramatic camera angles. But it was never looked as good as it does in this painting
