Description I decided to redraw it and see if I could make it better. Redrawn in the summer of 2012 after doing some boards for Ultimate Spider-Man, I'll let you know when that episode airs. This show died to soon.

This is the kind of animation the Disney Marvel Spiderman’s should be going for Instead the animation in avengers assemble, ultimate Spiderman, hulk and the agent smash,Marvel Spiderman 2017 and black panthers quest look god awful and not nearly on the level at spectacular Spiderman, avengers EMH and Wolverine and The X-men!

Thanks, only Cheeks can do Cheeks, so I drew it similar to him but in a style that reflects something more of how I been drawing recently, if that made any sense.

It would be fun to be a part of that show, but I'll leave the designing up to Cheeks.

Right. And Ultimate Spider-Man's crap-tastic nature (animation is decent enough, I guess) was sure to make people forget about it's superior predecessor. Ugh...

yep, I mean there are some good ideas just like USM the comic, never uses them and suffers form bad writing. look SSM was a kids show but it was an accessible kids show that all fans could watch and enjoy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RogueWriter3201 In reply to skysoul25 [2013-03-16 19:02:52 +0000 UTC]

Respectfully, I would argue that SSM's superior standing was due to it *not* being a "Kid's Show." Much like Young Justice and Green Lantern while it was toted by Kid's WB and, later, DisneyXD as being a kids show it rose above that simple category with complex character development, smart writing, smarter dialog, and unique, quality animation.

Greg Weisman (lead writer) intended a five year arc culminating in the death of Gwen Stacy. That is not a narrative agenda seen in "children's programming."

Disney's shortsightedness in canceling SSM for the simple reason of not wanting to share profit/credit with Sony sadly appears to have left no valuable lessons upon them, as seen with the creation of USM (I see *no* good ideas in the series) and the recent cancellation of The Clone Wars.

awe your one of THSOE kind of fans then. Okay. Repsectfully I can agree with soemthings you brign but look a kids show as I put it, can be more itno what you may call a Family show. liek young justice, green lanturn, it has soem jokes for the kids, smart writign that can be seen for all demographics and fun for the whole family. that way, you, kids, etc, can buy said prouduct and all of you get a LOT mroe out of it, no ti wasn;t goign to be the death of gwen that story arc wouldn;t have happen. Greg said it wouldn;;t happen as in to explian ti the whole 5 season arc's woudl come to A 17 year old peter parker graduating for high school. if sony woudl allow them to made direct to DVD movies they woudl of been -G to PG-13, then we proabably woudl fo seen the death of gwen stacy.

really harry as venom coudl of been soemthign good and complex. it wasn;t entirely Disney's fualt. Greg hismelf explined it much better then I can, so in his words here is what he said " Marvel DIDN'T cancel it.

It's all very complicated, and we were certainly the recipients of bad corporate luck, but no single company cancelled the series. We just wound up with a situation where no single company could proceed with it.

I'll try to break it all down:

1. Sony had originally produced SpecSpidey as part of their overall entertainment license of the Spidey property (which of course included the extremely lucrative live action films).

2. But in order to win some concession on those live action feature films, Sony returned the animation rights to the character back to Marvel.

3. So now only Marvel could produce a Spider-Man cartoon. Sony no longer could, which meant SpecSpidey couldn't continue at Sony.

4. I have no idea whether Marvel was interested in continuing Spectacular Spider-Man or not. But let's assume for the sake of argument that they would have liked to.

5. They couldn't.

6. Why? Because Sony owned all the specific elements (designs, storyline, etc.) to the SpecSpidey VERSION of Spider-Man. So Marvel would have had to license all that BACK from Sony.

7. You can imagine how unlikely THAT scenario was. Marvel finally gets the rights back to do an animated version of their marquee character, and then they have to pay Sony to do it instead of just starting from scratch. That was never going to happen.

8. Of course, all this was complicated by the fact that Disney purchased Marvel, and Disney and Sony are direct competitors.

9. And I'm sure Marvel was excited to put their own stamp on an animated Spider-Man. Who could blame them?

10. So that was it. We were toast through no fault of our own. The folks at Marvel, Sony and even Disney all seemed to like our show, but the corporate mess made it impossible for us to continue.

11. And, yes, it is a bummer. (For me, at least.) But it's no single person or single company's fault. It's just how things shook out.

12. And finally, though I have no involvement with the upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man, you can't deny that a lot of great people have worked on it. There's no reason to think it won't be as good or better than SpecSpidey. To a certain generation, SpecSpidey will always be THEIR Spider-Man cartoon. But to a new batch o' viewers, I'm sure their Spidey of choice will be the Ultimate." Yeah DSisney cancelled the clone wars OR it could be jsut exactlly liek this mess.

Frankly, I found your label of "one of those..." kind of insulting given the negative connotation so I won't bother with protracted counters to your statements because, honestly, I predict an extended debate with you would only become a lesson in frustration.

I will, however, touch on one aspect to your rebuttal, and that is the fact that you blatantly contradict yourself. You claim that Greg stated that the "Death of Gwen Stacy" would have never happened (despite his saying the complete opposite on his blog...) then you admit that it would have happened had the series been able to proceed through the five year arc he and Victor intended culminating in a DVD movie? (which is how -again via his blog- Greg would have liked to have ended things for the series)

As for Disney, they brought the series over from Kid's WB to the DisneyXD channel *after* reacquiring the Animation rights due primarily because of it's large fan-base; explain the logic in choosing to do that at all if it was "easier" to start from scratch? No, Disney wanted the Lion's Share of any profit derived from Spectacular and when Sony wouldn't permit that *then* they chose to pull USM from their backsides out of equal parts greed and spite.

To summarize, while I will not argue that talented people have worked on USM (as said, the animation is impressive), all the exceptional talent in the world can not help a show if a network/company insists on keeping it one thing when it can be so much more. The fact that Ultimate Spider-Man has little to nothing to do with the comic series from which it derived it's namesake speaks volumes.

Honestly, from what I've seen consistently online via reviews and the discussions I've had with comic/animation fans both of my age and younger, USM is *no one's* Spider-Man as the age group that appears to provide the series with it's ratings won't likely even remember the series when Disney eventually cancels it. Something Spectacular Spider-Man does not share as it's *still* remembered and admired. And with that, End of Line.

well Disney sin;t the once great and wonderful company it used to been. I blame the 90's and hwo new disney is none other then a branding company, also I wasn't contridicting myuself. you didn;t state the whole film possiblly the greg place on his blog of what he wanted. you just greatly implied that in season 5 it would END on death of Gwen stacy. I simply corrected you then, then agian I have AS, so I took your comments as littelral. I woudlnt; say that either. Quesada appernetly , started doing work on USM, DisneyXD okay and greenlite th r proejct.

oh yes Paul Dini is on USM, and whiel I willa gree with you the aniamtion si top notche and talent people are on board, well, yes NO ONE Lieks USM. Whiel I woudl of LOVE to still ahve specSpidey, I only have my own incarnation, and I tihnk [beign Bias here] it's probably comes a close second TO SpecSpidey. So Movign on, I wish they made at least a sequal sereis to Spectacualr with the same cast and wrting, and crew, jsut with MathrewB's Artwork. as much as I Love Cheek's work, thsi picture ehre really has impressed me.
