Description
The massive hangar door groaned unwillingly but managed to raise nevertheless. Someone would need to see to that, but when? Who? There were too many essential tasks to be done, and not enough people to do them.Wearily, the Director led the recruit out beyond the safety of the viewing platform and into the hangar proper. Dalia, nearly a recruit herself, pulled taut on laces as thick as young trees. The incursions were happening ever more frequently now, increasing geometrically, and it was no longer possible to protect everyone everywhere. Battles were decided based on the number of lives at stake and the odds of victory, not to mention how fast a location could even be reached.
The Director looked from Dalia to the recruit and placed a hand on her; are you sure you want this? It wasn't spoken. Lioness needed every woman willing and able to fight for the coming exodus inland, though the Director would never force another to take up the burden.
The flash of tension across the recruit's body was confirmation of her resolve. Moments later, Dalia rose and sprinted out with fists clenched. Lioness would pull humanity up by its bootstraps, or go down swinging.
Some of my favorite paintings that I've made have been the ones set in hangars and other industrial spaces, so it was a real treat to work on this one. I'm really pleased with the level of realism I was able to achieve, especially with all of the various elements that I had to combine together (the people in the foreground, the forklift, the giant, and the hangar itself!).
It's funny, but the reason this piece even exists is because I found a die-cast model forklift a the hardware store. My girlfriend and I were there looking for fly traps, and I just happened to see a display with model cars on it. I looked closer and saw there was a little forklift there too. Ā I'm always on the lookout for things that I can incorporate into my work, and I knew I had to have it.
I started looking through my sketchbook for concepts that I could use my new forklift in, and I rediscovered some thumbnails from around the time I was working on Found of a giant tying her shoelaces. I realized that that would be perfect for a new hangar scene, and everything kind of evolved from there. Goofy, I know, but it's the truth!
I recorded my entire process for creating this piece and put it all together into a video. If you'd like to see the reference I used, the set I made, and the painting techniques I used, you can watch the video here!

I feel like a broken record but I think you are one of the top talents in the GTS community. I love these ones at the facility, seeing people around really gives you a sense of scale. Have you thought about doing an action shot? Like jumping a hurdle or punching a giant punching bag or something? Anyway, awsome work.

Man, thank you so much for saying that. It really means a lot to hear.
I've definitely thought about doing an action scene, but I haven't figured out the logistics yet. Reference is such an important part of my process, and I haven't managed to figure out a good way to capture a high definition photo of someone in motion yet. I don't want things to look artificial and stiff (like if I had someone pretending to jump or punch but they were actually standing still). Much like overcoming my anxiety towards big, complex street scenes, I imagine this will be one of the next major hurdles I tackle.

Not sure what kind of camera you are using but you should check to see if it has a Continuous Drive mode. This mode is used to capture many photos in quick succession while you hold the shutter button down and I believe was made explicitly to capture shots with lots of motion. As it allows you to start taking photos at the begging of the action and then choose the best one from all those taken. The video I linked below explains it nicely and though he likely isn't using the same camera you are, you can see the standard symbols for continuous mode when he starts explaining it.

Oh snap, I was wondering what Continuous mode was haha! Thanks man, this will be a huge help! Love that the video was short, sweet, and to the point. Well, we'll see if I don't end up doing an action shot or two this year!

Yeah, can't hire any models at the moment unfortunately. Having to get creative to keep productive right now. So far, so good on my end as far as COVID goes. I'm an essential worker, but my job doesn't have me coming into contact with clients ever thankfully. I hope you're staying safe too man!

I know right? It feels so good haha!
And hey, I started reading The Ascension! I'm a few chapters in. I absolutely loved the way the prologue was written. So much atmosphere and mystery there. Looking forward to seeing how the story continues to develop!
