Description
You may remember that, not long ago, I drew a boxing poster featuring a dog called Butch and a cat called Rex, inspired by the top toony work of Salvador Meza. (If you can't remember that at all, just go over here: [link] and try to pay more attention next time.) You may also know that Salvador subsequently created an image of the two burly brawlers squaring off in the ring (just over here: [link] ), with the mauling moggy giving Butch a right old clout up the side of the head. Well, the above picture follows on from that one, showing the next key moment in the match - and as you can see, Rex has managed to follow up his initial attack and catch the bulldog off-guard with a big left paw to the belly. Ouch, eh?It's not the best of starts for Butch, that's for sure. But what will happen next? Stay tuned, fight fans, because there'll be more coverage from our main event very shortly! But first, here's a word from our sponsor.
"Buy."
Thanks, sponsor.
More of Salvador's excellent artyness can be seen here: [link] , and Butch is copyrighted to him in no uncertain terms. Infringers will receive a punch up the bracket.

It'd be even weirder if you'd ever boxed a bulldog named Butch.

Awesome work! But wouldn't it be cool it you animated this entire fight too? Think about dude!

MatthewSmith In reply to AnimePhreak1 [2008-07-25 11:20:19 +0000 UTC]
It would be, as James Woods would say, wicked cool. Tragically I have neither the time nor the tools nor (and here's the real sticking point) the talent necessary to do it. Curses and drat, eh? Still, if there are any animators out there looking for a project to occupy their spare time, they can feel free to have a go at bringing Butch and Rex to life. Just so long as they don't do a 70s-Tom-and-Jerry on us and make them best friends who never get into arguments, natch.

Cool. Not bad at all. Great work as always.
I like those effects on the Rex's arm while he's punching Butch. It makes it look bit more cartoony.

Thanks! I often like to include comic book-style effects in my drawings, because I think they can give the whole thing a greater sense of movement and energy.

Good action scene. This is turning out nicely.
I like the expressions on both faces here. The drawings are still superb, as is the colo(u)ring and the detail.

Ouch... again! Rex is itself trusted, perhaps Butch will give back his blows to him like his own medicine.
Their friends say:
Hound: Butch, Γ‘nimo, tu puedes derrotarlo! [C'mon Butch, you can defeat it]
Vulcan:EnseΓ±ale a ese gato lo que tienes [Show to this cat what you have]
Max: Come on buddy, spirit, remember that we are with you!
I love it!

Delighted you like it! And I doubt Butch is going to be an easy opponent to beat, especially with his pals cheering him on. It'll be interesting to see what happens next!

Cheers! Butch is a terrifically fun character to draw, and this is largely connected with the fact that his face really lends itself to big, over-the-top cartoony expressions. A big Hurrah!, therefore, for Salvador's spiffing character design. Hurrah!
I must admit, I've always felt kind of sorry for the cats in cartoons, because they hardly ever stand a chance against the inevitable big, hulking dog characters. This is one for all those people who found themselves wishing that, just once, Tom might turn round and smack Spike right in the chops.
