Description Some of you have, at various points, expressed a desire to draw like me. This is probably because you are crazy. In the wake of the deregulation of the mental health industry, unfortunately, the best I can do is give you this.

If you liked this, check out my updated tutorial!

Awesome. I found your gallery and was literally thinking: "Man, I should ask this person how he/she does their work", and low and behold I find a tutorial already up. But I gotta ask, is there a bigger one available? I wouldn't mind seeing close-ups of the various panel stages and artwork.

I don't know how I missed this for so long, but I'm now using a different method and will have a new tutorial up... sometime. Perhaps in Youtube format, with Space Jam music. If I ever get around to it.

I just realised... Not having drawn the shadows right results in an endless circle of "FUCK". XD

Well, you're the win. oO I use similar methods and I still fail. XD And I'm not blaming PSP9 for this either, there's just too much missing consistency in correctly used information on, for example, the shading... or simply said: I no win. D:

Great tutorial, nice comedy and as I'm already on it, purely awesome result. X3

Wow, I didn't know an artist such as yourself had so many tangents while making the single piece. I think it's funny that these instructions also contain some off-the-wall advice as well, such as the healthy alternative to nachos. I'll try it.
Very nice picture over-all, and pretty simple to follow as well.

Dude, this fucking flow chart owns.

However, addressing the person that mentioned having adverse feelings toward vectoring: should that make me feel less talented because I go over ALL of my work now with the pen tool in order to create the cleanest, most perfect lines? Even though I actually still had to sketch the image first and THEN ink it?

*shrugs* Whatever the case may be, I like how most of the stuff you do here is something I have either already done numerous times or have some limited experience with.

Bravo.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

vantheman9 In reply to Drakkle [2008-12-04 06:48:28 +0000 UTC]

And I'll also say

"cleanest, most perfect lines"
your opinion

"lines with the least human character possible"
my opinion

I understand you want your art to be a piece of mind with no body attached, or some such of the essence. To me it's a lie.

Maybe I'll die off by natural selection? The pics in my abstract art gallery get 10 views each but I had great fun making them.

Is the pen tool fun? No? Then in my mind, I win, better art or not. Maybe it is fun for you. I don't know.

Sometimes I love a drawing enough that I feel like it's worth some trouble (such as tracing over my lines). I also don't have access to a vectoring tool, I'm using the software that came with my wacom - painter essentials 4 and photoshop elements 6. I refuse to pirate software for my art(idealism, gets me a lot of nowhere, but the toughest part of myself to change), so I have no vectors anyway.

I can possibly see where vectors might seem worth it for me to do, "I want this picture to look the best I can make it", but, I'm a quantity over quality artist (something else that someone might not understand), and I think vector lines look dead.

I hope my opinions aren't too harsh. The comments area of this deviation seem like a great place to discuss this, though since mauller^2 likes the neater stuff I'm probably speaking to a bunch of people whose opinions are closer to his.... please articulate.

Drakkle In reply to vantheman9 [2008-12-04 21:36:08 +0000 UTC]

I truly understand where you are coming from, because frankly, I feel I hold my sketches closer to my heart than my own digital work half the time. But that said, in the same token, I still feel, in a more diminished sense, that the pen tool still takes skill and a certain sense of ability to use fluidly. Your lines can still get totally messed up if you don't know how to use it correctly, much like how if you don't have a steady hand, your lines look terrible when you draw.

Yes, it may be considered "cheating" to some, but be honest here for just a moment: if you were using a wacom tablet that was only 4x3 would your lines look all that clean either? Perhaps if I had a bigger tablet I would be able to draw with it better, but it irritates the hell out of me that my digital lines always end up looking ugly when my analog, pencil using hand never makes mistakes like that these days.

So perhaps it's a tool of necessity that became a tool I enjoy using now. I admit, while having "character and heart" in your art is probably the most unfortunate thing you can do, most people will never be able to tell who used a pen tool and who had a very steady hand. So people will still look at a picture that looks exactly the same as one that someone used vectoring with and still feel the same emotion. Nothing is really lost by using vectoring in my humblest of opinions and in fact, it only takes me 10-20 minutes to ink a sketch with vectors and pen tools versus the excruciating amount of effort I put into making sure my lines are perfect when I traditionally ink it or try to use the brush tool.

So unfortunately at this point, it sadly comes down to differing opinions. While you say that to you it is a lie, I still feel that it takes an artist to envision something grand and be able to produce it so the world can see it, regardless of how it's done. Pen tool, vectoring, hand drawn or otherwise.

But please, if you have more to add, I would be interested to hear it. It actually kinda makes me want to try inking something by hand again to see how it used to feel lol.

I used to have a tiny wacom

It made me insane

And your reasoning makes perfect sense
Having a big wacom is a luxury I greatly enjoy

I wish I still had the patience to use markers like I once did, [link]

Drakkle In reply to vantheman9 [2008-12-05 07:23:38 +0000 UTC]

Heh, yeah. If I had like... a 9x12 or even a 6x9 I think I would take more time to try out hand drawing everything in my images. But since I am quite limited with such a tiny tablet, I just try to make my own life easier.

But that is an intriguing sketch, and though my own tastes have never really fallen in with full nudity (not that I think in any way nudity makes a piece of art pornographic: that would just make me a hypocrite and a creatin) it made me want to browse your gallery a little. Anyway, good piece.

"character and heart" in your art is probably the most unfortunate thing you can do...

I don't know what the fuck I was trying to say here, with the word "unfortunate" but I meant to say "IMPORTANT thing you can do".

Whoops.

vantheman9 In reply to Drakkle [2008-12-04 05:54:40 +0000 UTC]

I said "I would feel less talented if I used them"

"You" isn't in that sentence, and I didn't intend for it to be taken that way.

I also say to myself, "I would feel like a jackass pageview whore if I made fanart."

Plenty of people might want to flame me for that.
But the subject of that sentence is "I". There is no statement about what others should feel. We all have our reasons.
