Description Naz was feeling so very, very tired.

Tired beyond the point of yawny drowsiness. Tired beyond the point of being floaty-headed and blinky-eyed. Her eyes weren’t blinking, or drooping, they weren’t moving at all. Her eyelids floated at half-mast, the golden orbs beneath them staring blankly ahead, glazed and unfocused. Come to think of it, she hadn’t blinked in what felt like a really long time.

(it had, in fact, only been about twenty seconds since she’d rolled her eyes and insisted that this sort of showy nonsense was only effective on the extremely gullible, and that someone like her, with an advanced understanding of human psychology, couldn’t possibly be taken in by such rudimentary theatrical methods of manipulation…or something along those lines. It was kind of hard to remember…everything from before the watch was like a half-remembered dream, and the harder she tried to concentrate on any of it, the more elusive it seemed to become.)

Of course not. If she blinked, then there’d be a moment where she wouldn’t be able to see- Oh, right! The watch. She was looking at it, staring very intensely, her eyes tracking its every movement as it swung gently, rhythmically to and fro, side to side. It was very important, the most important thing in the whole world, she needed to watch it swing back and forth, back and…

…she was so tired that she forgot what she was doing again, and very quickly zoned out, just staring flatly ahead off into space, passively letting the watch flutter across her field of vision. So tired that her mind was like a sieve, everything just endlessly leaking through the gaps. The watch – oh, right… - the world around her, what she’d been doing, even who she was…the only thing she had enough awareness to latch onto was the voice telling her how very, very tired she was feeling right now.

She was tired, so tired, tired to the point where her brain had almost completely shut down, her senses wrapped up completely in the warm blanket of all-encompassing cosy obliviousness.

Oh…

There was a watch swinging in front of her face…her eyes were open, and she was still upright on her feet, and at a distance one might have mistaken her for fully alert and awake, but rest assured, there wasn’t a single thought rattling around in Naz Duluc’s pretty little head.

The lights were on, but nobody was home. A thumb that was not hers reached up to wipe away the trail of drool crawling its way down her chin, gently dabbing at the corner of her mouth like a mother fussing over her messy child.

“Shenaz Duluc,” the voice whispered softly, “you are now hypnotized.”

Wait ...is that right?

…she didn’t want to be hypnotized, she was pretty sure…and…there was something about being too smart for it, somewhere lost in the hazy muddle of her thoughts…or, rather, being completely closed off to the idea that she even could be hypnotized. Nobody was “too smart”, she reminded herself, (if anything, hypnosis tended to be more effective on more intelligent people) but openness and imagination played a big part, and her advanced, logical understanding of the human psyche – as logical as a science like psychology could become, anyway – had robbed hypnotism of all its mystique; like a magician pulling back the curtain to show you exactly how his trick worked, once you understood it, all the magic was gone.

But there was something about that voice…she wanted to believe it…

…which…maybe that meant she did want to be hypnotized? Just a little bit? At some subconscious level…and the subconscious was, of course, what hypnosis primarily dealt with…and if she subconsciously wanted to be hypnotized, then…

Huh…okay, guess I might actually be a little bit hypnotized…

But if she was aware enough to realise she was hypnotized, then surely—

“When you feel my touch against your forehead, you will be asleep. You will sink helplessly into a deep, deeeeep sleeeeeep…”

Wait, seriously?

If Naz hadn’t been hypnotized, she would’ve rolled her eyes at that. People who didn’t have advanced knowledge of human psychology might mistake states of hypnosis for sleep because the subject became incredibly still and relaxed, but there was a difference between this relaxed trance-state of hyper-focused concentration and actual sleep. Hypnotised people didn’t lose consciousness, for starters, they remained aware of their surroundings at all times, and could wake themselves whenever they wanted…if she hadn’t been hypnotised, it would’ve been tough not to correct the voice there...

The tip of an index finger gently pressed against her forehead, right between her vacant, glazed eyes, and those striking amber irises rolled back into her skull, leaving only blank white exposed…for the split second before her eyelids drifted completely shut and she sighed the last of her consciousness away, the command to “sleeeeeep” barging its way in through the open door of her mind and making itself completely at home in the empty space.

Her head tipped back, lolling as far as her neck would allow, her jaw went slack, her mouth hanging open gormlessly. After a couple of seconds, a low, nasally rumble echoed from somewhere deep in her throat, shortly followed by the gentle whistling of air rushing through her lips. Even though she knew that people in hypnosis didn’t sleep, it wasn’t like she was in any position to organise her thoughts into anything resembling a protest; Naz began to snore.

As fast as you could say “sleeeeeep”, she was out like a light.

...not because she was hypnotized, though.

She was just very, very tired.
