There are 3 distinct species leftΒ  and only found in Australia. The ones we deal with are , " Vombatus Ursinus " or " Bear Nosed Wombat ".Β  Vombat or Wombach is the name the aboriginals gave them.

There is the " Southern Hairy Nosed " or Lasiorhinus Latifrons the technical term and last is the Northern Hairy Nosed or Lasiorhinus Krefftii.

Vombatus- means wombat like
Ursinus- means bear like
Hirsutus- means shaggy or coarse hair
Lasiorhinus- means hairy nose
Latifrons- means broad fronted or broad forehead

Closet cousin is the Koala Bear

Yes they are very wild animals.

Well now... Ive looked up exoctic and geez and its quiet confusing the definition of . Basically they are native to Australia , they are
" supposedly " protected, and its illegal to have them as pets.

Having said that , there are a large number of dumb people that have no problems hunting them, and illegally having them as pets.
Only to find out that small , cute and cuddly soon turns into something like, big bitey , destructive , pain in the backsides. They are wanderers who cannot be contained in say, a house or bedroom , laundry etc. Mind you , they dont have to big to bite and destroy

Farmers and property holders destroy these guys because they , decided to move out in Wombat and wildlife territory only to find out that wombats have their places to go as do the kangaroos, so low and behold they all so very surprised when they go through their fencing to get there. There are ways round the this. E.g put a smallish pipe where the wombat is going through the fence and wombie will never put a hole in your fence again. They always travel the same route.

You can bet your last dollar that the neighbours wont be to happy with you when they wombie ventures into their yard and starts destroying gardens , vegie patches , kids toys not to mention the digging of quiet large burrows under yours or their house. There travelling range can be up to 4 kilometers a night so you got buckleys of trying to yard one of these guys. Unless its in a steel cage. Which would really make me mad.

They are one of the most determined and stubborn creatures on this planet.

Wombat will do what wombat wants. Thats why they call them wild!
