Description Man, that poor poor, guy is in for a fright of his life when he finds that girl in the bathroom. For, you see, he has a severe phobia of girls, especially the ones in a yellow shirt and bluish socks, it's like finding a whole mess of spiders for some people... or moths, or snakes... Irrational really, but then all phobias are, I mean everyone knows that moths, wasps, butterflies, cobras, ghosts, spiders and so on are not dangerous in the least (except for cobras, and wasps) and yet many people are scared of them.

Hard for me to imagine, since I don't have any phobias myself. I fear nothing. Except, maybe being poor, but that's not something one can stumble upon in a bathroom one night.

On an unrelated note, I like thinking of creepy things, but then when I draw them they never come out creepy enough, I mean this won't scare a small child, but oh well, I still like it ^__^

I was kind of dissatisfied with this picture, I have a better "nightmare" sketch, I hope I'll have time to make a proper computer drawing of it sometime this year ^^

That's strange that you seem to have so few fears....maybe you have forgotten how to be afraid because your life is so "mild". Whatever that means. Personally I'm afraid of heights, doctors, dentists, police, bums, convicts, idiots, government officials.....I'm afraid of losing a finger(anytime I use knife), drowning in the ocean, being tortured, being lost, left behind, pain, cancer, fear itself, ghosts, etc! Ever thought about waking up to a giant discusting bug on your face? What's your secret to being fearless? I can always imagine the worse case scenario and my imagination is out of control sometimes....especially in the dark.

Anyway...I like your color palette but your particular style doesn't seem to lend itself well to creepyness. The muted colors are calming which is quite nice. The girl in this picture looks cold, lonely, and THEN maybe a little scared. The alien creature looks like he's simply disappointed he got the wrong room. "Dang it! This isn't room 217? Well...shit...I'm outta here....sorry to bother you."

Positioning might be an issue here. She should be huddling in a corner like she's hiding (not chillin' in the middle of her room) and a look of wide eyed terror(not startled) like she just heard a sound she should NOT be hearing. The alien should probably be looking directly at her. It should have a look of evil intent on his face like he knows she's in there and there is nothing anyone can do to stop him/it from doing what he's about to do. Mwahhaaawhoo ha ahaaaa!

I take it you've never watched or played Resident Evil? The suspense in the video game was too much for me....I could not finish it. The first movie was pretty scarey, anyway. What's the scariest movie you've seen?

I think after a while you just become tired of being afraid, and it sort of stops ^^ Plus, if I *am* afraid of something tangeble, my brain will go "what are you, chicken? bak bak bak" untill I go and check it out or confront it in some way. It's true, it really does that.

"Dang it! This isn't room 217? Well...shit...I'm outta here....sorry to bother you."

HAHAHA... That's aweosome!

To be honest, I'm not too hot on the composition here, I sort of made it up as i went along which tends to lower quality drammaticaly. Next time I try for creepiness I'll be sure to plan a little better. And fearful expression is hard to draw, I looked a couple of photos, but it is too subdle on real faces to easily emulate in my cartoonish style. Also I need to come up with a spookier monster... Maybe make it look like a child, children are pretty creepy to begin with ^__^

The scariesm movie I've ever seen was The Ring (American Version). I watched a bunch of horrors sinse then, but none of them even came close, especially not Grudge (that some people insist on comparing to the Ring)

"What are you.... chicken?" Yes. Part human....but mostly chicken. I tend to not like "scarey" movies because the writing usually isn't very good. There are exceptions of course but many of them are all about cheap tricks to used to put you on edge(a cat jumping out of a cupboard or closet for no reason) and then endless suspense. I thought the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Wax House(The Ring, The Others, Wicker Man, etc) were pretty scarey......I'd rather have watched something else, though.

I hear you about your composition issue with this pic. I haven't drawn anything in a while but mostly the composition is random and I don't really plan stuff out....it just happens. Sometimes it's a good thing but often it's not. Usually I have no composition. I usually just want to sketch a character or a sexy babe and I could care less about the backround or even finishing the piece I started. I get bored quite easily. Anyway.....keep doing what you're doing!

Yeah, too many movies rely on sudden scenes which are annoying and not really "scary" per se, they are just startling...

As for composition I find that it's good to have a plan, even if you end up deviating from it a lot, because at least you never have to ask yourself what's next and then come up with stuff on the fly.

I quite often don't have a plan but I've had some "happy accidents" and sometimes I like making up stuff on the fly. But yeah....in general it's good to have plan of some sorts or your stuff becomes a little too random. I'm no expert, of course, but it's a good skill to be able to come up with stuff on the fly. I've heard from professional artists that clients like to change things last minute. Sometimes you can get away with your original vision but(at least with commercial art) you will often have to please the client so you can get paid and/or do repeat business.

Well, I find some things are more improv-friendly then others. Clothes, I find are easiest to change around since they don'y affect oveall shapes and such. Pose, on the other hand is something you wanna get right at the beginning.

johnnyjester In reply to MaximK [2008-05-16 23:35:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah....the pose is as important as the expression on a character's face....maybe more important. I think the mark of a great artist is how well they convery their intentions to their audience. If an artist wants you to feel sadness or horror when you look at their work and you feel just the opposite....well....that artist probably needs to go back to the drawing board, obviously. Michael Whelan is one of my favorite illustrators because he captures the mood so well of any story he's illustrating.

Of course...it's nice to get everything right the first time but reality is often not so kind. That's why I stick to fantasy!

Yeah, I feel a bit unmotivated to post... I kind of have some stuff that could hypothetically be posted, but I just don't feel that it is up to the standart as it were. Which is ironic because a lot of the old crap that I did post is pretty ugly ^^
