Contest entry for 's contest. He required everyone to draw his character with one of his friends' characters. I chose Tassy Fire Soul, the vampire liger (because that is an awesome idea )

Jaggie and Tassy were minding their own business when a mysterious, red-and-black furred stranger challenged them to a hunting game. They eagerly accepted. After several hours of wandering through the forest without any sign of their adversary, however, the two paused for a short rest.

Jaggie scratched the inside of his ear with his little finger, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. He casually remarked, "Wouldn't this be easier with a rifle and GPS navigation?"

Now for the technical stuff. I started as I usually do... with several scraps of paper and lead all over my hand I originally said I was going to do animal forms but after some doodling I thought it would be cooler to try anthro. Because my brain works linearly, it's difficult for me to put two hominid characters in a picture without some serious planning, but I finally came up with this design and rolled with it. I colored Jaggie first. I used beige for his belly and goldenrod with brown for his main body color. Though the shades are a bit off, it works. Most of my own characters are only bi or tri colored, so doing a character with more pattern variation was a challenge. Once I finished him, I wasn't very pleased with my work (I am too critical of myself sometimes). But I had to put this picture aside to work on a birthday present. When I came back, my outlook had changed and I actually felt good about what I'd done.

Next I colored Tassy. I used yellow for her body. It may be a bit too bright but it helps add some color to the picture. I didn't know exactly what to to for her outfit. I eventually decided on a torn fish-print t-shirt and blue jeans because she is described as a "tomboyish" character. Why is she holding a spear? I just thought it would look cool. She's trying to hunt the proper way. Jaggie... eh, not so much

The last thing I did was the grass, tree, and "red and black furred stranger". The grass was easy--a dark, neutral, and light green composite, blended and whitened. The tree trunk wasa little more difficult just because of its size. I used three different browns (a dark one, middle one, and lighter chocolate one) in a scratchy, loose fashion then blended and whitened like I did the grass. The shadows were too light after that so I had to go back with black. I was a little unsure if I should color more grass or not to give the picture more background, but after thinking it over, I decided just to leave what I had for fear it would detract from the subjects.

Overall, I am pleasantly surprised at how this turned out. Thanks, DJ, for hosting this contest!
