Description Part of the random giftart thingy that was mentioned on my journal some time ago. Topic of interest was "My characters" as sugested by . By the way this is gonna be long, so get ready! For a large version of the picture, go to [link]

Well I got to say I don't really have many characters lol. I tend to spend more time making images, and in most situations, a character is created for the necessity. However, as time passes, that character sometimes gets used quite a lot of time and therefore begins to grow on me.

Eventually I make a little story for that character, which gets more complicated over time. Until that character becomes part of a fictional world, and then more characters are created and so on. This happens to most of my characters, some on the other hand, are designs that I’d like for a long time, but found them hard to integrate into an existing story. So I had to create a world for them to exist, and the whole process repeats itself. XD

The characters shown here have been circulating in my mind and sketchbook for quite some time. These are the ones that I’ve put most time and effort in creating a world for them to exist in, which I hope to flesh out by animating one day. (That is, if that day comes lol)

Anyways from left to right:

001
Tress Nauter and the Endbringer, two of the main characters set in the post-apocalyptic future. Tress being a carefree machine-hunter, think bounty hunter that hunts renegade robots/androids, and the Endbringer, a war machine of the past, who also happens to be the largest bounty that any machine-hunter can set his hands on. They are part of the Gunsong story line, something that I have been working on and off. Gunsong also happens to be Tress’ nickname.

They are perhaps my oldest characters. XD They have been through countless revisions, due to the influences and experiences I had acquired over the years.

I can tell you that the very very first version was waaaaaaaay far from that, lol. I was heavily influenced by Shirow Masamune who created Ghost in the Shell, which many people respect as one of the many few important anime that came out. Big guns, big eyes, you name it; it was there……well minus the boobs anyways. XD

Another major inspiration was from Yukito Kishiro, the author and artist of GUNNM, or Battle Angel Alita. While his style was not as exaggerated as Masamune, Yukito had a more natural way of story telling, as well as characters that really made you remember them. I’d guess with those two names, you can imagine where most of my mechanical imagination comes from. XD

I was later influenced by Hayao Miyazaki, first with Princess Mononoke and later Nausicaa (manga and movie). My very first movie from Miyazaki was Totoro, seen on a local channel during a school holiday when I was still quite young. I enjoyed it, but I’d never pondered much about the movie, or the creator, I was too swamped with studies at that time.

Fast forward to college, Princess Monoke was shown to me by a friend; initially I was doubtful that the creator of Totoro could make something that was claimed by many as thought provoking. Anyways I sat down and watched it, and that was the beginning of me trying to find and watch every other Miyazaki animated film.

Eventually, a bit of his style grew on to me, simple but very effective at storytelling. I came to realize the importance of storytelling in film. Like Akira Kurosawa, he too has a distinct style to his films, films that leave us thinking. I have great respect for people who can achieve that in their films.

002
The random cat girl! Yesirree, it’s a cat girl alright! Well, she is not really a character that I’ve put a lot of time into, but this is one character that I’ve always been doodling in various styles and stuff. She has no name, no story and no clothes! Wait, forget about the last part.

ANYWAYS, she does have a story, albeit a loose one. Right now I have two main stories running around, one being a sci-fi Gunsong, and another set in a medieval fantasy storyline which has no name yet lol. This character is definitely in it though, where she fits in…………….I have no idea! She’s R A N D O M!! XD

003
A tusked wurm, also set in the medieval fantasy story line. If anyone of you find this image somewhat familiar, it is. Especially if you have played Magic the Gathering. Magic cards were one of my very first few artistic influences, Kev Walker, Tony DiTerlizzi, Ron Spencer, Rk Post and Rebecca Guay. One of my favorite cards was the Argothian Wurm, [link]
a very nasty and cheap creature that I’d always use. Red/green weenie agro land destruction = very irritated opponents. XD

004
It’s a girl repairing a……UBER TOASTER! It will come and eat you up and then shoot your remains out where the bread would usually go! She is just a mechanic repairing a painted toaster. She is set in the Gunsong universe and currently she has no name, but she will play a large part of the story. That’s for sure.

005
The crew of 52A or five-two-alpha, also part of the Gunsong universe. The call sign 52A means a lot to me, as it was the call sign of the vehicle me and my buddies spend most of our mission time in. While not the most comfortable place to be, its definitely the craziest lol. This rendition of 52A rotates around the life of 3 crew members operating the MK2 Stallion walking tank called 52A.

There is supposed to be one more guy in the picture, but there was no space to draw him. Poor gunners always get left out. Anyways, this picture depicts them proceeding to a night mission, and if you can imagine all the dust and poor visibility, night missions are NEVER fun. XD

:edit:
After playing around with the colours I changed the colours quite a bit. Now its a day mission! XD

006
Three angry dwarfs! Coming right at you! These dudes belong to the medieval fantasy storyline. They are part of the small adventuring party who call themselves, THE THREE ANGRY DWARFS! I haven’t given them names, but you can easily see their characters

These guys were created when I first started playing the Baldur’s Gate series of RPGs, followed by the Icewind Dale series. I really love the portrait pictures, especially those done by Jason Manley for Icewind Dale.

007
Last but not least, is another character from the Gunsong universe. Tenatively called Lilith, she is one of the main characters in the story. Who she really is? I guess we shall find out as time goes by.

Phew, that was sure a hell lot of typing! If you managed to read this far, you have my sincere thanks being able to last that long to my ramblings. XD Anyways, feel free to comment on the picture. Thanks!

Wow, your characters are all so wonderful! I especially loved reading your short descriptions about them. Your dwarf characters are too funny. I can't help but keep chuckling at the one on the left. Seeing them all now, I really want to read up on your story. It sounds like it's quite an awesome tale to be told!

Ah yes, that guy. He does have a bad habit of head-butting opponents in the crotch. XD
