Is the red thing budding or mating? or something else?

Budding, actually. I haven't quite nailed down the reproduction of this species in its entirety yet.

So what's with the mushroom-thing? Does it have multiple methods of reproduction? There are some species like that here on Earth, like hydras, jellyfish, strawberry plants, just to name a few.

The mushroom is a photosynthetic organ- think of it as a retractable leaf. The creature derives a portion of its energy from sunlight. (I'm probably going to change the shape anyways because it looks too... mushroomy.) Anyways, regarding reproduction, there will be some form of gene transfer at play during some stage of the reproductive cycle. What we are seeing in this image is the end product- the offspring is genetically distinct from the adult it is currently bonded to parasitically. After a time, it will separate and bud off some offspring of its own- once again, after some form of gene exchange.

So, like the grandulus?

Yep, same principle. Most of the creatures I design are at least partly photosynthetic.
