Description I wanted to try out painting a person, as I have always had difficulty with portraits. I thought that a self portrait would be the best way to learn, as I would be especially critical if the painting did not in fact look like the subject. The toughest part was getting all the features in proportion and in the right place. I did quite a bit of over-painting to correct wandering lips and streched noses. I'm happy with how it came out. It does look like me. Mission accomplished. I think I'll paint some more faces next, now that I know it can be done.

Acrylic on canvas, 18'' x 24''.

Wow.... You handle paint so well. I like the different levels of detail throughout the painting especially how your strokes become so much looser on the neck.

Congratulations on completing your self portrait. That is something i too struggle with, or rather i don't as i hardley dare to attempt it. But i'm contemplating doing one soon, and putting extra care into making it look like me. Did you work infront of the mirror or from a photo? I like your use of skin tones by the way.

Thank you. Like I say in the description - you tend to take more care to make it look like the subject when it is a self portrait. I worked from a photo. I don't think I'm up to working from life yet. I like to get all the distances and angles just right.
I like the skin tones too. It's funny how lots of different colours become apparent when you look hard. Well, this is quite like me, but there are some things wrong. For example, my nose looks too 'western' in this picture, not quite wide enough. I'll paint some more soon, and maybe do another self portrait after I have gotten some more experince.

Yes i love discovering obserd colours when studying something in places you never thought they could be. I find including them in the painting often helps to bring them to life that tiny bit more. I wish you well with future attempts and i look forward to seeing more of your lovely work to come.

Thank you. I checked out your gallery, but there was only one drawing up so far. It's very good, I hope you put some more up.
