Description Here are a few general tips for using line weight. I'm not always 100% consistent with my use of these guidelines but hopefully this drawing illustrates them fairly well.

In the art groups I'm in, this became the standard go-to tutorial we post every time line weight needs to be explained or we give someone a crit on their lines. It really just sums up things so well in a very visual and easy to understand way. Thank you for making it!

I hope you don't mind, but I've referred several people to this tutorial as a quick reference lesson in line weight in some critiques I have recently given out. I find it is a good visual start for people to understand what I am referring to. Thank you for posing it.

Good tutorial not just for the example and teachings, but for the fact that it's ridiculous space-efficient compared to about 90% of tutorials on this site. Great work!

Line weight is definitely something I need to practice more...

intresting, i never thought of using the pencil tool to ink

Yeah! Some good things about using the pencil tool:

1) It is easy to clean up your lines using either the pencil eraser or the pencil with white "ink". Lines made with a brush are harder to clean up  because you have to try to match the antialiasing and opacity blends.

2) pretty easy to fill color areas with the pain bucket (if you enclose most of your areas with unbroken pencil lines).

3) always delivers sharp crisp lines. If you want to soften them, you can apply a slight blur or median effect later.

For comic art, whatever finished size I want at about 300 or 400 DPI.

What are the brush settings for a hard line like this brah?

I use the pencil tool and then flatten and reduce size of image before saving for web. If you work at about twice the final size or larger and then reduce the finished art it stays sharp with out looking pixelated.
