Just a fun idea I had for my Sonic Forces fan comic that I want to make. When I was deciding the design for the Avatar you play as in Sonic Forces for my fan comic adaption of the game, I went through several ideas when I came across some old artwork I made of my very first Sonic OC. She was a tiger named Jewel who had several design issues that make me cringe today, but I got a spark of inspiration from her. Sonic Forces is a game where you can try to bring your very own Sonic OCs to life (there are limitations, of course, but still a HUGE step forward for the Sonic OC fanbase), and I thought brining back my very first Sonic OC as the Avatar for my fan comic would be PERFECT.
That's when I noticed something else that made my first OC such a great match for the story I wanted to tell. As we know, the Avatar is meant to be a foil to Infinite. Basically the good half counterpart to Infinite's evil. A sort of Yin and Yang situation where they are reflections of each other. And given that my OC just happens to be a tiger sparked me to go all in with the mirrored foil idea. Tigers are definitely more feline while jackals are more canine. It also just so happens that Infinite has black fur with white stripes and accents. I decided to make my OC a white tiger with black stripes and accents, reversing Infinite's colors. I even managed to make their ears polar opposites in a mirrored sort of way as Infinite has large, pointy ears while my OC has smaller, round ears. I LOVED the polar opposite reflections bouncing so naturally off the two. Then, of course, there's the opposing factor that one is an older guy (I'm making Infinite around 18 years old in my comic) while the other is a little girl (Prism is around 11 years old).
Then came the matter of their eyes. At first glance, it didn't seem likely that I could have their eyes mirror each other in a way that felt natural without pushing it too hard. That's when I came across this video (skip to 21:18): youtu.be/elx13JcvzVI?si=-6IN4U⦠. While it is made to be believed that Infinite was born with heterochromia, we also see a clear hint in his very design that this may not be the case. A clear signature of Infinite's design without his mask is the scar going over his right eyes. There are several studies that show that a person's eye color can change after their eyes endure some form of injury, which could be why Infinite has one blue eye with his scar while his other eye without a scar is gold/yellow. After watching that video, I do honestly like the idea that Infinite is partially blind in his right eye which resulted in its blue hue. Heck, we even see evidence that Infinite is blind in his right eye from his mask where the right side where his eye should be is seemingly blinded while the left is still clearly visible. This sparked the idea that Infinite's natural eye color is gold/yellow, but the injury to his right eye caused the blue hue and left him partially blind. Bouncing off that idea, I decided to make my OC's natural eye color blue. At some point in the story, I think it'd be really cool if she was wounded in her left eye and left with a permanent scar and partially blind, much like Infinite but from the opposite side. After some time of her eye taking time to recover, when they finally take her bandages off, her left eye could turn gold/yellow, matching Infinite's eyes.
I LOVE this design reflection I managed to pull off between the two characters as it really adds on to their dynamic from a visual point. I can imagine the characters, if and when they notice Infinite's and Prism's mirrored visual points, thinking that the two might be destined to be foils to each other even by their own appearances. However, once it's revealed that Infinite is Prism's missing friend Zero, it becomes more of a situation where they are unlikely friends who surprisingly go together well when seen together. I can even imagine Prism being a bit happy about the scar over her eye and cheerfully telling Zero that they're more alike because they both have scars and different colored eyes.
This is just a fun little design concept/development that I wanted to share with you guys and get your opinions on. I'm honestly wondering how many of you have noticed the parallel designs between Infinite and my character Prism or if it just wasn't obvious enough. Please let me know what you guys think of the design choices I made for Prism. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
