Description
FYI, its big. Really big. This is a collection of my most presentable WIPs, in no particular order. I felt they had been gathering methaphorical dust on my HD for too long. You might recognize some, others you might not.
Why am I airing out my dirty laundry? Well, its sort of a prelude to my newest piece, which I feel is, technically speaking, my best piece. You guys might disagree, for reasons I'll touch on later.
Anyways, dissection of each and why production was halted.
Top Left:
I re-fell in love with this one when I opened it up. I had forgotten a few subtleties i had worked in. Anyways, canvas was just too damned big and overwhelming, and I couldn't get the brute to look right, color-wise, to save the piece.
Top Right:
Some concept art I had started but never finished. I like the idea...again just too overwhelming.
Bottom Left:
Was trying something different...a first person view piece. The hand and the gun turned out about as good as I was hoping, but nothing else on the piece really came together, so I scrapped it.
Bottom Right:
This one went through a lot. I would work in spurts, sometimes 2 to 3 months apart. The locust was a billion times better than I was hoping, but I couldn't get whats-his-face to not look like an ape.
Anyways, ya. Thats it.

Do you know how unbelievably sweet the top left one is. I didnt' give you enough credit for that one. That must have taken AGES to complete, and with a mouse it must have been effin' frustrating. Man you really need to finish that one off.

Man those look sweet, I dont know what your talking about
But I think your problem is you want to focus in on the details too much, and your forget to look at the composition holistically. Which ends up making the proportions and other things a bit off and I guess that makes your frustrated.
this semester im taking an art class, and the teacher keeps blabbing on about that stuff. but i took his advice, and i drew something that I never thought I could draw before... it was pretty sweet. What really helped was just mapping everything out really well beforehand, and then slowly adding details in layers, not all at once.
but anyway man all of those are sweet, you need to finish at least one.... they have alot of potential

Yes, thats EXACTLY my problem. I can never look at the piece as a whole. Thats why my lighting and coloring always looks so jacked on my work...i'll draw the main character or whatever with nothing more than a light sketch for the b/g, if that. So, from my main drawing i have to match up colors to what i want the b/g to look like, and if i want to add elements (like fire) i have to go back and change colors on the main one...its a frustrating cycle thats hard to break. My newest piece, even though i got help on the colors, was a good step because i laid out basic colors before anything else.
I really wanted to get into some art classes this semester, but tried too late and they were all full. Plus, im in engineering, so my schedule is pretty full as is. btw, do you like your art classes? I have friends in graphic design who get overworked and over stressed, though they're probably taking different art classes than you.
Great advice man, i really appreciate it.

yea it sucks.... there is so much work. i get pretty stressed out when I have stuff due because it takes so long. plus mine is really early... and i always get there late which sucks. i don't think a comp graph class would be as bad though, but the traditional art ones are pretty serious.
still its definately a good thing to take, it will help alot, esp if your teacher is good

the top left one is sweet. the texture you've got going there is immense. you should defintely finish it off, you don't even need a decent background just an implied one (i.e blurry). the others are great also you can see youve put in a lot of time into each.

Good point on the b/g..my original plan was for a huge battlefield strewn with bodies and destroyed vehicles, like in the 'Believe' trailers (the ones with the diorama). I guess a simplistic, blurred one wouldnt look too bad...and with the angle it might even look appropriate.
How's the brute look, btw? I liked the textures, but the colors always seemed sucky to me.

the top left one looks best i think. Master Chief really looks good, but it would be hard to finish the rest to pull the piece together just right.
Sad that you couldn't finish these, but I can't wait to see your next piece

I could see the b/g being a black hole of time and frustration, especially if i couldnt get it to look right.
I'd like these to be done, and I'm not going to lie and say I don't have the time, I've just lost the interest. :/

Damn, those are nice. I must say that the ape-face is frightening, but I believe you should continue with the bottom-left one, it looks incredible so far!

ha, ya, ape-face is kind of a creep.
I might at some point go back to these, but they're sort of creative road blocks. Plus, I'm a perfectionist, so that means each piece would require at least 10-15 more hours to complete each one...excluding the top right one maybe.
