Description
Dean’s eyes search warily as he watches you bound up yet another set of doorsteps.

“Calm down, Dean,” Sam says with a soft sigh as he watches you knock on the door, chatting with the other children as you each await an answer.

Dean sighs somewhat huffily, a lone hand running through his hair,

“Calm down? How the hell am I supposed to be calm?” the elder Winchester gruffs out under his breath, “It’s Halloween, Sammy. The day where everything always seems to go to hell—oh you can count on it.”

“I know, but if you keep behaving so skittishly you’ll freak (name) out. She can already tell something is up.”

Sam slyly gestures to you with a nod of his head in your direction. Even amongst the bundle of children, both brothers can make out your slight form. You’re rocking a bit nervously—back and forth on your heels—and Dean can immediately tell it has nothing to do with you being shy. Despite being next in line to receive another handful of candy, your eyes are darting between your bucket of sugar and the two brothers.

“She’s been watching you all night.”

A brief smile graces Dean’s visage before he musters up a believable smile and sends you a wave. You positively beam, hopping in place with an eager wave of your own. Dean grunts irritated, shoving both his hands into his pockets.

“I’m just…you know!”

Sam nods with a half-smile, “I do, but right now the kid doesn’t need two hunters, she just needs us to be her family. Today we can’t be those guys. For her and just for today.”

Both brothers glance upward in time to see you bounding backing to them.

“Look! Look at what I got!”

You skid to a halting stop, barely escaping collision with one of Sam’s legs.

“What’cha get?” Sam playfully inquires as he moves to take your small frame into his arm with one fell swoop.
“Well, I got some kit-kats and a pack of skittles! And then…”

Sam hums in agreement when it’s appropriate as you ramble on. Dean looks to you both before turning his gaze to the row of house to come. Honestly, he could see where Sammy was coming from, but he still couldn’t help but feel somewhat wary. They had an obligation to their ‘career’ of choice, to serve and protect in the oddest way and human could.

Still, he had a new an obligation: to you, this small child, unaware and innocent. Was there rally any harm in in ensuring that you enjoyed yourself tonight? You who was always patient, eagerly awaiting their return after each and every hunt. You who found happiness in the sheer idea of companionship.

Was there any fault with doing something right in this forsaken world? Certainly not.

“Hey, kid? Are you gonna waste the night barking or are you gonna wrack up a decent stash?”

You tear your eyes from Sam to regard Dean before grinning widely, “Stash! More candy! More candy!”

You continue to cheer out into the night, wriggling about in Sam’s grasp to encourage the younger Winchester to set you down. With a chuckle Sam abides, placing your feet back upon the ground. Almost immediately you dash forward, taking up Dean’s larger hand.

“Let’s go! Let’s go!” you chant, tugging Dean along before settling into an elated skip.

Sam glides forward, making sure to keep his strides shorter to maintain your pace.

“Change of heart,” The taller man teases and Dean simply elbows him in the side before offering his brother an easy shrug of his shoulders.

“I guess so. Ain’t nothing wrong with doing something right, for someone else, every once in a while.”

Sam silently quirks a curious brow. He smiles to himself before shaking his head, pleased. He then shoves his chilled hands into his coat pocket before setting his gaze upon the streets filled with children and their families and friends. For once in their lives, both brothers would be able to indulge in the simplicity of juvenile and lackadaisical fun. Perhaps Halloween this year would be for them just as it had been for every other family.
