PATHM = Percy and the Haunted Mine

Since I completed by rewrite of Percy and the Haunted Mine not too long ago, I figured I might as well do this.

First off, in case anyone hasn't read it yet, here's the link to it; Harvey and the Haunted MineHarvey and the Haunted MineBased on Percy and the Haunted Mine by David Mitton and Robyn CharterisAdaptation by meNote: This is canon to The Adventures of the Sodor Engines. In the summertime, the stationmasters on the North Western Railway enjoy a friendly competition for the most beautiful station on the Island of Sodor. One evening, Sir Topham Hatt came to Knapford Sheds to speak to Harvey."Harvey, I need you to pick up some flower bushes for Lower Tidmouth Station," he said. "A lorry was delivering them, but it broke down. It's near Maithwaite.""Maithwaite?" said Harvey nervously. "Y-y-yes, sir." And he set off.Harvey was still new to the railway. Since arriving on Sodor, he found that he didn't like traveling to Maithwaite at night. The line passed through a junction next to a spooky old quarry mine. To make it worse, a thick fog had rolled in as he made his way up the line.Harvey hoped the signal at the junction would be green. He didn't want to stop next to the mine. But the signal was red, so he had to stop.As he waited, he saw something. An old chimney was sinking into the ground."Swinging hook!" he cried."What's wrong, Harvey?" asked his driver. He and the fireman had been distracted by a nearby owl, and hadn't seen the chimney sink. Harvey wanted to tell them, but he was worried that his crew wouldn't believe him."Never mind," he sighed. Then, the signal dropped. Harvey raced away as fast as he could. He wanted to get away from the mine. The next morning, Harvey was helping out at Brendam Docks. Bill and Ben were there delivering some china clay. Harvey told them about the disappearing chimney.Bill and Ben laughed. "It's the naughty gnomes!" Bill said."Naughty gnomes?""Little fat men with big feet," answered Ben. "They make strange things happen.""It's legend," added Bill. "You better be careful, Harvey. Or they'll steal your wheels and filch your funnel!"Harvey didn't want to believe them, but he wasn't sure. That evening, Sir Topham Hatt was waiting for Harvey at Lower Tidmouth Station."I want you to collect some trucks from the abandoned mine," he said."Yes, sir," puffed Harvey. But he really didn't want to go there again.Harvey hoped he wouldn't see anything else disappear. He slipped into the siding, and buffered up to the trucks."This mine so spooky," he stammered. Suddenly, another building sank into the ground. This time, his crew heard it."What was that?!" his driver shouted. Harvey started to shutter violently."Double swinging hook!" he cried. He then lurched forward and rammed the trucks so hard that their loads spilled out. Harvey could see what they were."Naughty gnomes!" he shouted.Harvey raced away faster then before all the way back to Lower Tidmouth Station.Harvey's driver told Sir Topham Hatt what they had seen."It's the naughty gnomes!" Harvey cried. "They like to cause trouble. It's legend!""Nonsense! The old buildings are collapsing in empty mine shafts. That's all.""But I saw the gnomes!" protested Harvey."Of course you did," laughed Sir Topham Hatt. "Garden gnomes.""Garden gnomes?""To decorate Lower Tidmouth Station. They're not scary. Garden gnomes bring good luck. Now, please, go back and collect them."Harvey was scared, but he knew he had to be responsible. So he carried on."Must be brave, must be brave," he kept saying to himself. When he arrived back at the mine, he waited from something else spooky to happen, but it didn't. And Sir Topham Hatt was right; the garden gnomes weren't scary at all.His driver and fireman loaded the gnomes back into the vans, and Harvey took them back to Lower Tidmouth Station.Later that week, the stationmaster thanked Harvey."We wouldn't have won the competition without your garden gnomes, Harvey."Harvey felt very proud. "You were right, sir," he said to Sir Topham Hatt. "Garden gnomes are lucky after all."

And the reason why I think Harvey would've been better for the episode is because the episode was part of the sixth season, which was Harvey's debut season. I think it'd be more realistic for him to be afraid of the mine and not like traveling to Maithwaite at night since he would likely still be adjusting to his new life on Sodor. Why would Percy not like traveling there at night? He would likely be used to it by now, especially if he passes the mine while pulling the mail train.
