Description
I started this as a little doodle, to get used to the brushes in ps7. I really like the way they handle. I think I should have tried something with more saturated colors, since that is usually where I run into problems with photoshop. This isn't really a portrait, but here is the reference photo: [link] It's a lovely stockphoto by ~kokainxstock I took it in a weird kind of direction.

perfection! It is sooooooooo expressive (is that a word?) I loooove it!!! I'm glad you didn't go for saturated colors, cause this looks real good with soft ones.

Do you use stock brushed or did you download a sweet set from somewhere? i am trying to work better at the painterly effect, but unfortunately photoshop isnt getting me what i want. i am getting painter today, which i have never used so we will see. anyway, if you can hook a sister up with some brushes, i would give you a virtual hug.
you art is killer!!!!!!

I think that the close view makes this a bit scary, but in a good way since I feel like there's no place to escape that stare. I like the simplicity of the green(ish) brush strokes.

Meant to say,
"Not that your other images AREN'T wonderfully wonderful, of course!"
Because they ARE wonderuflly wonderful.

I've got to say, this is my favourite piece by you so far.
The very strangeness is what makes it wonderful, to me. There is something about that strangeness that makes her very real... it gives her a history, a background, a story.
The eyes are awesome. One moment they stare at you, the next they go criss-crossed... it's VERY clever how you achieved that. The eyes, and then the lips, to me, are what really, REALLY make this image.
She's quirky, strange, gorgeous...
The most beautiful thing you've painted so far, I feel.
Not that your other images are wonderfully wonderful, of course!
It's just personal taste that I like stuff that's a little strange...
In a world so straight, we need more strangeness.
It's late and I babble.

Thank you! I think I have a little soft spot for strangeness too. Or endearingly un-ordinary as I like to put it.
You know your "babbling" is always welcome with me.

Alright - I must say, this is one of the most talented works I've seen you create.
From my eyes, I see more skill in this (portraiture, subject, technique) than
I've seen from you. This is not to say your other renderings are less good,
they're just different. And in this, I see more at work. I see this as moving from
an illustrative 'cuteness' to a serious capture of an individual. Perhaps the blacks
and whites add to the serenity. A beautiful piece.

very interesting piece (love the eyes!!), and I think the colors work very well for this particular image.
by the way, do you remember what brushes you used?

minix In reply to besotted-god [2005-04-14 21:42:11 +0000 UTC]
Thank you!
I used a regular round hard-edged brush for most of the rendering. Then i made a new layer on top and scribbled some random brushstrokes with weird splotchy brushes all over it, and set the layer mode to overlay, i think. Maybe soft light or screen?

glad those brushes are working out for you... took me forever to figure out the brush adjusting tool is not on the left side anymore but moved to the right

Heh, when I first saw this, I was thinking Wednesday Addams. But the puffy red-rimmed eyes make her look really depressed. An intriguing picture. Kind of a caricature of someone.

I was thinking maybe just a caricature of a photograph of me (my face). I don't have a particular photo in mind, but since I now have a digital camera, I could get you one soon.
