I kid you not, there actually WAS going to be an episode of HHPAY where Ami and Yumi kiss. But it was cancelled due to LGBT being a big deal for kids shows at the time. This was more of a dedication, honestly, to Cartoon Network cancelling the show.

It's funny to look at this and think with retrospective how some things have changed in ten years. Today we have "The Loud House" an animated show for children which features two same-sex couples; one of them is interracial and the other actually do resemble Ami and Yumi somehow. Things like that were unthinkable back when HHPAY was around if we stick strictly to shows for children.
Being completely honest, I wouldn't mind if Ami and Yumi shared a relationship like this. They're not sisters, even if they behave like that sometimes. Either way, I can understand why fans of the show rejected this idea nearly ten years ago (and probably still do). The real members of the band were -or are, I don't really know- married at some point and they both have children.

I find the two hugging to be some of the most heart-melting moments in any cartoon I've watched. Say what you will, but to me, it's simply kawaiiness overload time when they hug. Never thought the two were lovers, just friends who act very sisterly towards each other.

Yeah, at most, they'd be bisexual, and even then, very unlikely. I always thought the two behaved more as sisters would with each other, and that we can definitely confirm them to into boys [especially the nerdy ones].
