Description
Here we have a fox and a racoon dog taunting each other, in unconvincing human costumes. In japanese folklore, the spirits of the Fox and Racoon Dog are rivals, but in a healthy way.I wanted the fox girl to look classy and sharp, so I went for an almost 1920`s Fauvist approach. I played it safe with the tanuki girl, I wanted her to look homely and cute: at some point during colouring, she became a freckled, blue eyed caucasian girl! I am really undisciplined with my art (screw discipline, everything great comes from exploration and improvisation!!!)
This piece is all about testing new media: I`m increasingly more interested in portraits and I thought a change of paper and pastels would be fun and fresh. I had a lot of fun doing this piece and I`m now ready to take on those portraits I`ve been meaning to do for the last month. BTW I`ve never done pastels before!!

I'm loving the ears and the textures in this piece. As well as the story that this holds. I think it's got something, perhaps lacking in background but over all a nice piece with out

I love the textured paper and its color firstly because it just adds something. The softness of the colors and contrast between the characters is a nice touch. I really like the cat geisha on the left, and she reminds me of Ms. Kitty or whatever from Monkey Bones. Nice!

Haha, it's a movie where Rose Mcgowyn plays a cat lady who has short black hair, a white face, red lips, and a mole so it reminded me of yours. ^_^

Oh really! I visit every temple and shrine I can when I go there. I love Mizu-Dera in Kyoto: it's a temple embeded in the mountains.
Teach me how to shapeshift please! it would be handy!

Interesting concept and nice colouring! Did you use pastel crayons?

Yes, I used pastels...It`s such a fun medium to use. I know this piece is quite simple and messier than my usual stuff, but I had so much fun doing it! The fox was complicated but lots of fun. Thanks!

Ohh I really like it! And the 1920s idea was good too. The overly powdered white on her face makes me think of some 20s shots i've seen. Ohh the 'coon dog is cute I love her freckles and all
Ohhhh thats why in some animes like Inuyasha and other stuff had those filler rivalries with racoon dogs and shippo [i think inuyahsa.....well they're old XD [ohh and the new eps of inuyasha are saddening ]]

Thanks! about the Fox girl...I was aiming at beauty that is slightly frightening and ghostly. When I was a kid, those fauvist paintings traumatized me: I was scared, but at the same time I wanted to look at it. Here`s a link on the subject, if interested:

The other girl, I wanted her to look super sweet and huggable. Green is my favourite colour, so I went for that and for the face, she was gonna be asian, but I wanted contrast with the Fox. When I was in elementary, I had a crush on this green eyed, freckled girl: I guess it comes from there.
Thanks and thank you for reading!

I read it! I remember seeing those pieces in my 7th grade art class, but my teacher never told us the name for it :/
They used pretty bright colors I think it's cool!
Bahh, those pics don't bother me, It's the paintingsmy parents use to have in the house and this one particular one in their bedroom [where I LOVED to be in especially when I was 5 and under 8D]
It was a painting of this black dog and a duck in its mouth and it was HORRID. THAT is traumatizing

Oh my god, that painting sounds pretty bad. There was another painting in my mom`s best friend`s house with two chinese women whose face were green - it was a mixture of fascination and absolute fear.
Take care!!
