Description

Ever since the megapods developed their pseudo lungs, they have greatly diversified, especially in the more humid regions. Their gills are now completely covered by a plate of chitin armor, so natural airflow does not suffice for efficient respiration. Instead, they evolved one of their abdominal muscles to act as a pump to get the fresh air in and the used air out. Because of this, there are two openings on each side of their body to act as breathing holes. Since these holes are made out of chitin, they can not close, so the gills are protected by hair-like structures around the openings. The structures are also made up of chitin but are very thin and flexible.

The tree megapod is descended from the Tsanganan megapod. They spend their whole lives in the canopy, eating the leaves of the various trees of the Tsanganan forest. Using their front pair of legs that develoded into crab-like pinchers; they bend small branches tovard them for an easier meal. But they do not only eat foliage, often times they encounter other animal on the high canopy. If a small animal like insects or even a sleeping bird or lemur, they can catch them with their pinchers. They then slowly rip them apart with their mouth parts while the poor victim is still alive.
