The "splinter" was mentioned again during the episode "Sandy's Nutmare".

Have you seen Jayzeetee16's explanation for SpongeBob's modern behavior?

Basically, he sums up that SpongeBob acts the way he does because of the brain damage he sustained in his fall in "Whatever Happened to SpongeBob, or WhoBob WhatPants?".

That is an interesting theory.

The main problem is that spongebobs splinter infection gets too detailed each swelling. Just look at this from littlest pet shopm.youtube.com/watch?v=eSnFrZl5…

Yeah, it is way too highly detailed.

Yeah and from the example I gave you zoe's face went extremely mad with a bloodshot eyes sharp teeth and her voice changes from a sweet slightly lusty voice to the zombie noise from the black ops series

Since 2012, this is my least favorite episode of SpongeBob. Three years later, after binge watching seasons 6 and 7 to determine the worst SpongeBob episode ever, this is still my least favorite episode. I wanted to pick another episode that is worst than this but I realize this episode had NO redeeming qualities whatsoever (even the other terrible episodes had brief redeeming qualities).

As of right now, my least favorite episode is Bubble Troubles.

This episode was gross and a waste of a simple premise; simplicity can work if the writing is good. For example "Chocolate with Nuts", "Wet Painters", "Roller Cowards", "Rock Bottom"; these are examples of how simplicity can work. "The Splinter" on the other hand, fails.

I agree. This episode could have worked, but it went the worst possible way it could have gone.

I have a confession to make: I like this episode. I like it a lot. I find it to be quite bad in terms of quality, but in terms of enjoyability, it's probably my biggest guilty pleasure of the series. Out of all the episodes from season 5 onwards, this is the one I've watched the most. And, that's because I love watching it. I'm not very prone to gross-out in cartoons, and usually whenever I see it, I don't think much of it, but this episode in particular caught my eye. Something about pus I don't find to be very disgusting, and, to be completely honest, I find it to be strangely interesting of how it develops.
I'm very, VERY weird for saying that just now (no, I don't have a fetish for it or anything. That's taking it WAY too far!), but I just love the build-up of the lengths they take the splinter itself and how infected SpongeBob's thumb becomes. I dunno, I might just talk about it on my page, since it'll take several years for me to get to it at the pace I'm currently going at, and I REALLY want to voice my opinion on it.

Sean Charmatz' first episode wasn't good. At least he finished SpongeBob on a good note with Hello Bikini Bottom.
Which is worse: this episode or its partner Slide Whistle Stooges?
