Description
My prototype for my giant sized ponies! Sheβs a bit shorter than 3 feet tall when standing, and about 3 feet long while laying down. She can sit and lay down as with my other plushies, but I need to find a better way to stuff her leg joints so she can stand without support and not lose the stuffing from the joint bending. I'm probably going to try foam next time.Iβm also doing an overhaul on my pattern (yet again) so hopefully my next giant pony will turn out a lot better. Changes will include: stuffed ears, more shapely nose, better hind legs and defined butt, and a smaller head for my larger ponies. I also just bought a bigger embroidery machine, so next time the eyes and cutie marks should be embroidered. This one's cutie mark is minky and her eyes are painted cotton and satin. Also if I do make another Twilight I plan on using different colors (primarily a darker body purple and darker hair blue). I'm thinking of either making Twilight or Luna as my next big pony.
Any other thoughts critiques would be much appreciated!

Foam as in those small beads or the solid pieces? Because stuffing is cuddlier but that's just my opinion

It's taken me too long to comment on this one! Love your work, and this Twi is gorgeous. One of the best Twilights I've seen, and for sure the best near life-size pony I've had the pleasure of laying eyes on (other'n my own, of course ). I do believe you've earned yourself another watcher. I have to ask, do you also have plastic or the like in the ears and hooves to give them their form and flatness?

Aww thank you so much! I've spent a lengthy amount of time staring at your ponies bottoms in a stumped manner. XD Poor Twily here suffers from flat booty-itus. As for the ears, they are actually too flat in my opinion! But I do use craft foam inside them to keep their shape. As for the hooves, I actually used some thick lamination plastic. In the long run it didn't work out too well as they slide around, (though I could have probably sewn/glued them down), and are a wee bit pokey. But I think I'm just going to try either encasing them in a layer of craft foam, or just use it solely.
Also your big Twilight looks awesome so far! I can't wait to see how she turns out. ^^

You did the Milky Way plush! I can't believe I wasn't watching already XD You do eyes spot on. The ears are a bit flat; I put a curved piece of plastic in the front with rounded edges (I just get like a storage tote or rubbish bin and cut it up!) and stuff behind it, giving a nice 3D shape. For my own hooves, I take a piece of plastic cut just smaller than my hoof pattern and I sew a round hoof shape inside that, through the plastic and the fabric, to hold it still, give the hoof flatness, and then I put something between the plastic's rim and the fabric to give it a concave shape and define the hoof wall. That's how I do it ~ ,^ Maybe that'll help you out? If you ever have anything you want helps with, I'd be more than happy to share what I can.
Life-size Twi's body is already done, gotta get more stuffing before I can put that giant head on her XD

Aww thank you! I just tried something a little new with my ears, my smaller ones, and only used craft foam in them, and I think it turned out pretty good! But wow, those plastic bins? That plastic is so thick! You must have special tools to cut it with or something, but I mean, I guess you make Celestia shoes outta bronze... you must have. XD
Haha I used at least 10 pounds of stuffing in my big Twilight. I got the best deal for one of those 10 pound boxes at Joanns, less than $20! next time I'm planning on using some spongey foam though since it'd have more posability than the stuffing. Since she's so big the stuffing just kind of pushes away when I bend her joints Also she can't stand :c

It's thick plastic, but it holds it's shape and isn't really crushable, and my sewing machine normally doesn't have much trouble punching through it. I cut it with aviation snips, and they are the same snips I use for thinner metalwork
Oh gosh, I bet I've used 16 lbs of stuffing at least on a life-sizer. Just my Twi's legs are about... seven pounds together? I get the supreme stuffing, which I can't really compare to the stuff you can get in bulk more easily 'cause I haven't used it XD Haven't had any joint issues so far. I do stuff pretty densely too, I think, so that might be something...
And no super-sized pony is gonna stand on its own XD Not unless you've got something inside it, and that makes 'em less cuddlable > ,<

....your machine can SEW through it? I suppose they are pretty strong things... XD
The problem with my joints is really just the 'ankle' joint in the back legs. Since to make them lay down it bends at that joint primarily, all the stuffing has pushed out of the section. It could perhaps be attributed to the stuffing I used too though, but I tend to have the problem, though less severely, with my smaller ponies. Maybe your's don't have the problem since your legs appear to be separate? Or maybe my joints just need to be thicker. XD

I took a chance with my cheap machine, and it worked ^ ,^ Haven't broke a needle yet doing it. Even use it a little for book binding big volumes (only about 40 pages at a time).
I really think it's more that I pack my girls too tight XD I have yet to have anyone tell me I overstuff, but I'm waiting for the day that note arrives. The making my legs separate are the secret more to my fabulous rumps than well-wearing joints ~ ,^

Looking really good As for the legs and making her stand, the foam idea is what I do on my big ponies, I cut it so when unrolled inside the the legs you can stuff the inside with poly fill and it gives the legs a smooth look and it makes them stand very well without creases, but at joints I'm not sure how it would work if you want them to bend

Hnnnng. Super cute. Some thoughts:
- Are you sure you want to embroider the cutie mark? I've always been a fan of your minky appliques. Especially at that size I imagine it to be cuddlier.
- If you're looking for a darker lavender you might want to give Igloo a try. I think the color is pretty much spot on.
- Are commissions still a thing?

That is a good point. I'm a little bit worried how giant embroidery will turn out on the pony bodies since embroidery feels pretty rough. I think I might try fabric glue, but keep a bit of a seam allowance so I can hand stitch around the borders. The problem with the fabric glue is that it's not all that durable, and when the glued edges are exposed it feels rough.
By igloo, you mean the igloo0203 seller on ebay, right? Huh, I didn't even consider their lavender to be an option. I was actually planning on using shannons's jewel. Though it's a bit on the dark side it looks way better than lavender in my opinion. Also I'm curious if I actually have MB's version of lavender, though I didn't order it from them, I ordered from minkydelight before they went out of business, but I noticed MB and MD have a few similar colors and names that aren't even available on the shannon chart. (I'm looking at you Kiwi) Maybe I'll get a swatch from MB to compare. Also would you happen to know how much a swatch pack from igloo costs per chance?
Also commissions are totally still a thing. However, perhaps maybe not for ones this big, haha.
Anyway, thank you sososo much! I really appreciate it! If you still want a commission I'll give you a spot bump to show my gratitude.

Yeah, it's okay for eyes, but cutie marks... hm. For nice appliques I recommend Heat-n-Bond ultra or light! It's a heat activated adhesive you just iron on. Trace the cutie mark on the backing paper, iron on your applique fabric, cut out, iron on butt, zig zag. No warping, no chemicals, absolutely secure.
The swatch for all 3mm pile fabrics is about $7 according to *WhiteHeather . Only if you just get a swatch. I bought 2 yards of lavender and got the swatch for free. Their English is a bit wonky, but they're very nice and professional. They really have some interesting colors, especially browns and pinks. Hey, I could send you a small patch of lavender in an envelope for free, how about that?
Really, the color is spot on - Shannon's Jewel was too dark for me, and MB too light. Quality wise it's between MB and Shannon. Softer than MB, but not as shaggy-cuddly as Shannon.
Also, check your inbox - you actually alread put me on your waiting list.
I know, DA really needs a search for notes.
