This is a commission for my cousin of a scene from 'Merlin" of merlin and the great dragon.
This turned out a lot better than i expected, its probably because i used a lot of references. Fans of the show 'Merlin' might recognise this scene. I've never watched the show myself.
I've never actually seriously attempted to draw a european style dragon, I favour the chinese dragon style (cause its so floofeh). So i'm glad this turned out alright ^__^ The wings took forever to get to look right, after some research though i got it. They're not perfect, but close enough.
The references of the dragon were a bit difficult to use, as almost always the back of the dragon either isnt shown or in the shadows, so i had to improvise a bit.
But yeah, i'm really really proud of this!

And yeah, decent background indeed.
One thing I might add, though, it looks MUCH more beautifull viewed as the smaller thumbnail (the 300x200 one).
Viewed in full, I'd say there's too much white grain that isn't covered by the pencil.

Yeah thats just the effect those particular pencils make, and then its made more obvious by my scanner.

I can see how you would have to use more than one source picture to get this done. Most of the time when Merlin is talking to the dragon, all you can see is the dragon's face and most of the time Merlin has his back turned so you can't see much of him.
Looks like you got the details on both characters just right. I can see a few signs of the dragon's age and attitude here. I don't know how old he is, all I know is he's been imprisoned in that cave for 20 years and he always looks down on Merlin with a kind of "wiser than thou" attitude.
I like this kind of dragon (with scales and wings) better than the furry, chinese dragon. The only furry dragon i've ever seen is this one [link]
I think you should watch Merlin, it's really interesting and it's one of my favourites.

Yeah it was annoying O_o i tried to find youtube videos for some references as well.
You've probably seen furry dragons before, the chinese dragon (that is the extremly long bodied one) is furry, and its been featured in a lot of medias such as 'the never ending story' and 'spirited away'. And thats the dragon thats in those chinese new year parades.
i dont think its really my thing.

This is amazing!
I like it because it's just colored pencil but but you still made it stand out on each part of the drawing(like Merlin even though he's got some of the same colors~). I love the mixes of blue in some of the areas, and how the cave keeps going in the background~
