(Torpedo engines were once powered by compressed air.).
In short, they were the "clankas" of Hephaestus. These guys were just as "efficient" and "smart" as the B-1 battle droids in SW.
And there was nothing wrong with that until... until they came face to face with the time traveling Asterios. Because time travel was sorely missing from my story.
