Magnificent. So beautiful, there's a whole story here, and the creature is utterly unique. I miss making monsters

you are incredibly on-point, i think.
from an artist's point of view; when thinking to draw ... anything, it's much easier to simply compose an exposition to one's idea of something (a creature, a villain, etc - staring out into space with a meaningful look on its face); than to actually tell a whole story, as we are shown here.

this painting is... so much alive.

That reminds me of a character from Vampire: The Masquerade-Bloodlines.
Have you played it? This picture pretty much happens in a boss battle.

I love your use of the silhouette of the man, and the creature emerging from the mists in the background. It adds such depth! The muted colours and the red also adds to the mood of this painting. Really well done!

My name is Jervais Niteley, and I have known about the existence of them since the age of fifteen.

The London underground provided a safe haven for all sorts of less desirable types. Within the cold, damp corridors, there existed the dwellings of the homeless, drug running routes, dangerous exiles, and something...much more sinister.

They rarely ventured above ground, and seemed to have a keen recognition of the danger presented by their potential discovery. Sewage workers often found their handiwork, the desiccated bones of rats, pets, and on occasion humans, but usually attributed their gross discoveries to disease or starvation.

My father was one of the city workers who came across a large pool of remains in one of the main sewer lines, but unlike most...he saw them. When he came home that night, he kept rambling on about hundreds of legs and arms, while my mother tried in vain to stop his screaming and yelling.

Soon, he started to complain that he heard them underneath our home, that tentacles would come out of sinks, vents, and piping. That they were following him.

This went on for two years before he disappeared.

I wished that my father's ramblings were the words of a mad man, but I knew there was some truth to his lunacy.

At first, I also assumed the sounds were rats or roaches, but the sounds were always...wet. Like the sound of something dragging in watery mud. I could hear it most in the bathroom.

But with his disappearance, the sounds ceased.

Until now.

My mother had passed away, and I had recently started my job with Guardian as a junior editor. After an exhausting news day, I came home during the evening and threw myself onto my bed, fully intent on acquiring a good night's rest.

As I came close to dozing off, I started to hear wet movement. The sounds of something moist, navigating through my walls. Finding. Exploring.

Refusing to become my father, I attempted to ignore the sound, and tried to believe the noises were the work of vermin.

But the sounds never relented. Sometimes they would continue throughout the night, but sometimes they would stop abruptly, as if they were satisfied with their discoveries.

One day, after several sleepless nights in succession, my patience grew thin and I tore apart the bathroom piping. In the end of one of the deconstructed pipes, I saw something that resembled the end of a slug. A moving, exploring appendage.

I panicked, and with the tools next to me, I struck wildly at it, drawing blood and forcing it to retreat deeper into the pipes. As it coiled back into the depths, the thing let loose a bloodcurdling scream. It was angry someone had found it.

The sounds didn't stop. They grew more audacious, determined to find the source of their injury. It sounded like they grew in number.

I knew that it was only a matter of time before they came up for me.

The decision was made to put an end to them before I disappeared like my father.

Tonight, I will go into the underground nearest to my home and wait for them. I'll put an end to the madness.

Nothing better to prepare your players to the unknown than pictures of people with (hopefully) adequate weapons trying to stop something evil and menacing crawling out of the mist.
