Description
When: May 16, 2017Where: Zie-ZOO Volkel, The NetherlandS
It's been about 4 years since the Clouded Leopard brothers arrived at the zoo. At first, in their old enclosure, they would stay in this large, wooden tree trunk with a hole inside. They would be curled up inside, TOGETHER. We'd get to see a foot, or tail, and with some luck, even a sleeping face. They also had a platform near the top, where one might be if they'd had a sibling fit. When they moved to their new enclosure, with more high platforms.
By now, it seems like they've adapted well enough that they aren't as elusive anymore. They'll even venture outside when it's still light out, and wait for their food in plain sight. This time especially, he laid down quite prettily as if daring us to photograph him. That was one challenge we happil accepted
Species: Clouded Leopard (Nevelpanter)
Latin name: Neofelis Nebulosa
Originates from Southeast Asia.
Current status: Vulnerable

Beautiful shot!!
It would be scary to bump into this one in the wild, though!

Thank you!
And I think it would be rather scary They're not terrible large, and quite elusive, but any predator with intent can make for quite the scary opponent

You're welcome!
I've come across a cheetah in the wild and I kept my distance, but it was memorable!

Oh wow, that must have been an amazing experience!
Though it's nothing compared to seeing an animal in the wild, I frequent lots of zoos, and in some with the glass, you feel terribly close to animals. Especially with larger animals - big cats mostly - it's really daunting to get so close. I tend to keep my distance then too

Actually, it was. It had sort of yellow eyes, and it was this strange experience, as if I had gone back in time. Weird, huh?
Keeping one's distance is merely common sense, many people at zoos fail to realise that wild animals are not to be played with!!

Thank you! They always look very sweet (unless food is involved, they're very possesive and don't like to share).

It's just a big old sweetie-face! Great shot! I guess we'd call these 'newelpanters' or 'newelluiperds' over here ...

He really does have the sweetest face! It's a bit rounder in this picture because of the way he was sitting/ lying on the ground, which makes the skin push upwards a bit, giving him a bit of a fur scarf of sorts around his neck. My two former cats had that too, but even the young kitten has it; he's a very small, skinny-faced boy, but sitting like this Clouded Leopard, even he gets a fuller face.
It's so much fun knowing the name would be so similar to what we call them here
