Description
When: June 15, 2019
Where: Natura ARTIS Magistra Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Even animals who are more likely to sleep curled up in a spot where they're very hard to see, need to stretch their legs at times.
Mostly around the time they expect food to arrive.
We didn't wait for that moment, we just took advantage of the time they were up and about
Species: Margay
Latin name: Leopardus Wiedii
Originates from the Americas.
Current status: Near Threatened
Did you know:
…The Margay looks very similar to an Ocelot – their head is shorter, the eyes larger, and the tails and legs longer. Most notably are their climbing skills, which has resulted in them sometimes being referred to as “Tree Ocelot”.
…They are one of few Cats who possess the ankle flexibility to climb down trees head-first.
…Until the 1990s, Margays were illegally hunted for the wildlife trade leading to a serious depletion of their population.
…Female Margays have only two teats, and give birth to one kitten per litter – very rarely, there are two. There’s a 50% mortality rate amongst kittens, and have difficulty breeding in captivity, making the prospect of increasing their population very troublesome.

Both Margays and Ocelots are wonderful, like the other miracles of the animal kingdom

True! They're some of the smaller cats that don't get as much apprecation

No, it's an adult one - they're pretty small wild cats, about the size of your regular domesticated cat at home
Thanks!
