Description
"The Bake-kujira, or "Ghost Whale", is a mythical Japanese yΕkai from western Japan... People say that the Bake-kujira brings a curse and general misfortune to the area where it is spotted."See the progress of this work here: sta.sh/029hco4f3e7q
I took inspiration from the skeletal structure of Dorudon, an ancient extinct whale species that existed during the middle to late Eocene, particularly due to the menacing structure of its skull. A few artistic liberties were taken, such as the elongation of the front limbs for a more interesting composition.

Yes! The name roughly means "ghost whale".
Ever since I drew this I have had people commenting on how they thought it was made up for card or video games!

Such a good concept and execution! <3 I love this kind of stuff; it brings awareness to interesting myths AND relatively unknown creatures!

Thank you so much! I'm a big nerd for both paleontology and mythology, so drawing things like this is a real treat! ;u;

About a month ago I decided to challenge myself by drawing creatures that weren't in my comfort zone and thought "why not look up mythological creatures". I googled ones from various cultures and the bake-kujira came up. Around the same time I was researching the history of whale evolution so I put the two together and sketched up this idea of one really unfortunate fishing boat coming across the beast!
