not sure of the specifics in differences, but the centaur is inspired (not copied or even looking at it, just thinking about it really) by the horse in this Frazetta painting: [link]

Bovicentaur = Lower half bull
Hippocentaur = Lower half horse

The horns were problematic. It's promising!

er, the centaur is supposed to have ears lowered because of his headdress and the earrings he's wearing - that's what you meant by horns, right?
