BIG FILE! be patient[edit: I had issues getting it to play - if you have trouble try clicking download, hopefully that'll work]
I remembered to save right from the beginning this time so this pretty much captures the whole process of this piece.
It was painted in a bit over six hours, in photoshop CS 4.
The final piece had about 8 layers, including a couple of levels adjustment layers at the end to tweak the final look, and full res is about 4600px tall.
Enjoy!
Final is up here -

I love watching your process. I always am indecisive about which methods I want to try and this reall helps. I like the shadows you create then the process through to the highlights.

It will be great if you could do more of this step by stepΓ©
It will definitely help me out. I'll try to analyse this, and understand your process...

might i ask exactly what that final effect you did was that added the radiance/luminance to the upper area of the piece where the angel is?

I don't have it open just at the moment but I think it there was a layer set to linear dodge with some bright but very transparent gradients laid in, and possibly a levels adjustment layer with a mask over the top area

I've waited so long to find a tutorial like this. I've studied other "process" pictures really hard, but they make the jump from sketch to detail coloring too fast for me to really understand it. This is so helpful, thank you so much for posting this.
Awe-inspiring piece.

You're welcome! I find I do that too normally, there always seems to be a dubious step in the middle where it goes from 'rough' to 'painted' in one dramatic move; glad I could help

Thank you for putting this up here. Are you recording these manually, using a Photoshop action, or something else?

ahh a very nice ,gif ,looks like someone here thinks about his tutorials making it almost like watching a video, instead of making a 5 step non-loop that goes by so fast you think you loaded the image itself by accident
