Description It's been a while!
Here's a gif run-through of the twisted Holidays dragon piece that I did - was all painted on one layer, over a couple of sessions.
Other than that there wasn't really anything else fancy going on here, just the practical painting of it.

I'll put up the initial sketches I did into scraps in a bit. Here are the initial sketches, too .

Here's the final -

Could you provide your brushes or brush settings?  Specifically for the underpainting?  I need some help with my underpaintings.  Some suggested a chalk or square brush but it makes everything seem dry.  I like how wet your brushes are.  I haven't flipped through all of your images or journals to see if you brought it up before, but do you use SAI or Photoshop?  Thanks for great work (:

It's all in photoshop; and basically the only brush I use (and the only one on this piece) is the square brush in this set - mr--jack.deviantart.com/art/Th…

Thanks!

Thank you so much.  I'll try using these in my next paintings.  I'm taking a class where we will be making concept art for games.  I'm sure this will help get the look  want (:

I've been going through some of your gallery and you're work is truly impressive. It's amazingly inspiring to find young artists with so much knowledge and skill, and although I'm getting some anxiety over my own achievements, it also makes me feel like so much is possible. And given the chance too see some of your process work is indeed very useful, so thank you for sharing (:

Question!  Do you try to stick to one layer or do you just pile them up?

Thank you so much for sharing this!

Sweeeeet, Jack!
Thanks for taking your time to show us your magic!

What program/tool you used to animate the PS History Snapshots?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to betteo [2013-12-10 20:14:52 +0000 UTC]

Very welcome!

It's just frame animated in photoshop through the animation palette - there's a convenient 'make frames from layers' option that does the trick. (the only annoying part is when I've taken screenshots over different sessions or if I've changed image size along the way, but lining them up isn't so bad.)

Animation pallette, make frames from layers. Yes. Exactly what I use, feeling somehow like a caveman. Now we are two of us!
Not perfect, but does the trick!!

Awesome as always.

How frequently would you say you capture a moment to make these?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to getasart [2013-12-05 18:02:20 +0000 UTC]

I think between about every 2-5 minutes or so.

getasart In reply to Mr--Jack [2013-12-06 16:41:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah interesting, very thorough.

Do you set up a timer or anything like that or you simply made a habit of it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to getasart [2013-12-06 17:14:57 +0000 UTC]

The way I do it is having my history save a snapshot every time I save (which is in the history palette options), so it's also partly a good thing to get me to save more.

(It's not super convenient though because it means I have to do all the actual screenshotting at the end, and if something crashes along the way I'm buggered =_=

You never seem to focus on one thing for too long - something I still need to learn to do. Goddamn perfectionism gets in a way and I get carried away fussing over one thing and forgetting about the rest, thus ending up with a huge disproportional mess. EH.

Thankful for all your process gifs you upload, always a delight to look at, always so much to learn.

wow, spectacular! how did you "brighten" up the piece like 3 times? was that playing around wiht the values?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to ProfessorWilko [2013-12-04 17:28:03 +0000 UTC]

It's just playing around with levels - it's easier to do on a piece with a single layer, otherwise I have to create an adjustment layer and then start painting on top of that, which can get annoying.

I just came back from a holiday and I see that Mr--Jack replied to my comment! Thank you for the insight, upon examining your gallery i found a level/masking tutorial!

I really appreciate the feedback, I dont know alot of professional artists who take the time to answer these questions. Thank you so much!
