Absolute and real masterpiece. The purity of the lines and the simplicity of the composition resume what the photography must-be : a way to show the world around us with a totally new-eye. A way to embellishit or to make it ugly, but to transformate it by the eye of the photographer.
Clealy all is perfect, and all the work of a photographer is totally understanding here. An amazing shot, simply. I can believe it still now .

ax32 [2004-07-09 23:38:57 +0000 UTC]

Congrats on your daily deviation!
I had a look at your gallery, and you're truly a great photographer.
Only one thing that bugs me...
The background versus the tree/bird, the contrast are so incredibly perfect, and the edges razor sharp.
Have you dropped the curves, edited variations or added colour in any way?
I can't possibly imagine making such a capture with such an almost perfect bg in those colours.
I must admit that I have problems believing this is an un-edited capture.
PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong.

ax32 In reply to ax32 [2004-07-11 15:56:41 +0000 UTC]

The reason for asking was that I thought it might belong in another category, such as Darkroom or Photomanipulation.

Everyone enjoys perfection, and some people here at DA tend to do a lot to achieve that. Not that it's wrong in any way, but some don't tell,
and claim it to be the original capture until proved wrong.

That is why it bugged me, (your picture looking a bit vectorized and all that)

I just wanted to be sure, before I it
I would have loved to see the original caption though..

mrb24 In reply to ax32 [2004-07-10 13:39:20 +0000 UTC]

Why should it bug you, every photographer has a workflow. I use curves and unsharp mask in many of my photos. It is no different than a dark room. I don't think there is a photo in a magazine that dosen't have 3 or 4 more times the editing then the bird in the tree photo. SO enjoy the photo and enjoy your weekend. Thanks for the comment.

TheDevilMyself [2004-07-09 23:31:04 +0000 UTC]

It's hard to believe this photo is not retouched. The silhouette is so completely black that i can't see any definition within it at all. Speaking of definition, the edges of said silhouette run completely smooth for quite a while, then break into a edgy almost pixellated raggedness that furthers the "digital image" feel this picture has.

The more i look at it, the more digital it seems. This entire image could be perfectly recreated with relative ease using photoshop, and this just springs the doubt in my mind that this photograph is entirely conventional.

This leads to questions - What equipment did you use? Was it retouched? If so, how... and how extensively?

You said the sun was to your back, but the center of the photograph is lighter than the edges. This could be an effect of clouds, smog, smoke, whatever. It just adds to the mystery.

In light of your recent "daily deviation" status, i'd expand your description to address these issues... it'd help us believe what we're seeing. But if this is after all, a digitally untouched conventional photograph, it is quite possibly one of the most amazing photographs i've ever seen.

mrb24 In reply to TheDevilMyself [2004-07-10 13:54:12 +0000 UTC]

The photo is taken with a Nikon D100, so it is digital, which explains the pixallation that you observered. This is the down side of digital photography, it is very difficult to catch a bright sky and not have some distortion. Secondly I was using a 50-500 telephoto which explains the brightness in the center of the photograph and the halo effect around the edges of the photograph. The only adjustments made were in PS, which I explained earlier are a natural part of the digital workflow, it is our darkroom so to speak. I used the curves tool for a slight adjustment to bring out the contrast a little more and unsharp mask.
If you are looking into digital, do not buy a D100!

Another point I have to make is, I suck in using photo shop, so if I wanted to recreate this in PS I would totally screw it up! I find the less I use PS the better off I am.

hehe, awesome response - thank you - Your bad equipment payed off on this one. It's very nice. I myself do alot of photo manipulation, and also have a digital camera (Kodak Dx3500... old, cheap, crap) hell it's quality is probably a big reason why i went into manipulation in the first place - since that's the most it's good for! Ha!

Excellent picture, excellent response

Thanks
