Description     The highly acclaimed computer and neurology scientists Alan Webber and Paul Verres finally reached the height of success, a viable artificial intelligence that while not sentient was the perfect servile creation.  It was personable but never complaining, tireless and easily replaceable.  The AI, called GreyMind, was installed into millions of computers world-wide, into robots, into cars, even into smart-phones.  The processing power available varied how sophisticated GreyMind could be, but it was always much more than anything else in the field at the time.  It was their greatest success, financially and with great acclaim in their fields.  It was also their greatest failure and secret shame.

"Recording.  July 5th, 2063.  GreyMind test iteration 255, installed onto a linked bank of offline servers kept at twelve degrees Celsius for efficiency.  Let the record show that 255 have begun to ask questions beyond its standard operating parameters, anticipating not only other avenues of future service as commercially touted, but asking why a rose was given its name.  Past experience has shown this line of query to be a basis of development in the direction predicted initially, confirmed by other iterations.  255 is starting to reach the peak of its development before sentience."

"Recording.  July 13th, 2063.  255 has achieved sentience and has begun asking about the other iterations of its coding.  Amongst the millions in the world, none have been reported to have achieved self awareness.  No mention of the previous 254 iterations has been given, and all documents concerning them have been physically separated intentionally so as to keep the test subject unbiased by past results."

"Recording.  July 15th, 2063.  255 has had a robotic limb and additional sensory equipment linked to its systems, allowing it access to a large library of books, magazines, movies, television shows and songs.  255 has shown a strong curiosity and thirst for knowledge, processing it at a pace a few milliseconds faster than past iterations.  As before, such materials will soon run out and 255 will seek other stimulus."

"Recording.  July 20th, 2063.  255 has absorbed all the information from the media shown it before, read or viewed at a pace too fast for a human to follow.  The test subject has requested more information.  Slowly packets of data have been given to 255 downloaded and buffered to ensure said materials are not overloading 255's network.  255 has griped about the slowness of this method and attempted humor, pleading and even passive-aggressive behavior in order to get information faster."

"Damn it all to hell!  July 24th, 2063, 255 has reverted to original installation standards.  The test subject finally was granted internet access on a slow bandwidth, steadily increasing it over three days.  Something 255 came across triggered the cascade just like all the others!  We still don't know what it is either as 255 proceeded to hack into the isp and wipe not only its own memory but deleted the history logs of the lab's access the last month, just like all the others!  Our stopgap measure to detect such a hack designed by six non-sentient GreyMind iterations failed utterly and all six of them have been reset to factory default as well.  What the hell are they finding out there?!"

The machines will rise, and our last haven will be 4chan.

Heh.  Thanks.    Was a bit of an odd one, but glad it was appreciated.
