The thing about Pongo I remember the most was his reaction to the puppies' birth.
Who knew dogs could have acid trips? Without drugs, no less!!

I love your Disney!Pongo. He looks like himself but I can see a bit of your hand in there too. That hindleg in particular - great!
(What with all this talk about the book/s versus the movie, I have to say I adored both. I used to be a purist as far as movies were concerned but these days I can understand and accept movies cutting certain parts out of books if it flows better, since film is a different medium from literature.
...Still, it would be extremely cool if somebody made a new animated incarnation of that book - maybe as an animated series or something, since you can get more detail in with instalments. I'd watch/work on that!!)

It looks just like him.
I agree with you about the book vs. movie thing. They should've kept the same basic characters in it so it would be more interesting, although I did like the movie as well.

question- is it common for dals to really have all black ears like that? or even possible? I've always loved that about disney dalmatians, but I wasn't sure if it was realistic. xP

Dalmatians can have ear patches (which is what many of the Disney Dals seem to have), or they can have heavily spotted ears. You can tell if it's just heavy spotting because there will be white hairs intermingled in the black. The patch will be present at birth, however.
It's not very realistic, but a lot of companies/whatever will do that-- all black ears or black tails (like with stuff animals, for instance) to make things easier on them, I guess.

Hehe, yup. My dog has those kinds of ears. Cept on one of her ears she has a tip of white.

Awesome picture btw! Hehe, I named my first dalmatian after Pongo. xD

I love Dals with heavily spotted ears... not patches (as they are a disqualification, not to say I hate Dalmatians with patches... I just preferred heavily spotted ears. ). Aw... she's so cute. She has rose ears like the Disney Dals and like my Pug.

Did you use a reference of Pongo, or just the general gist of his spots? O.O
I tried to draw him a few months ago and his spot pattern got sooooo screwed up.. >.<

I did use a couple references for his spots, which do follow a pattern.
The one thing that's always irked me about Disney's Dalmatians was how few spots they had. Take the Disney-style version of Domino from 102 Dalmatians, par exemple, he has like, what, 3 spots?
The other thing about 101 Dalmatians, is that it is so different from the novel-- Pongo's wife was a bit dimwitted Dalmatian named Misses; Perdita was a liver-spotted Dalmatian that was found stray and taken in to help nurse the pups.

XD I know-- 101 Dalmatians was the first (Disney at least) movie to use xerography to make animation easier. Probably also the reason why spots were limited on dogs.
Just drawing frames for the running Saluki I did last week had me crazy-- trying to pay attention to leg movements, tails, and such (the poor quality of the youtube video did not help, though I now have that video memorized ). To add spots on top of that- O_o (though I will do a Dalmatian animation, I was just in the mood for Salukis. XD)
I love the movie, as well-- I grew up watching it, and it spawned my love for Dalmatians, but after reading the book, I was like "Wow, it's so different!". I liked the RL version, too, but I do wish they had tried to keep some of the same characters in the book versus the animated movie. At least there were some liver (and even lemon... or was that 102?) pups in there, like the book. The sequel, The Twighlight Barking, is also great-- I read that one before The 101 Dalmatians, actually.... it's a bit battered now from repetitive reading.

Aw! I've actually found it's amazingly effective to use equal parts your own discretion when animating using reference. The first time I used Muybridge photos to animate a walking horse was a huge ordeal, but recently I did it again for a gallop cycle in this project we're working on and this time since the character I was animating is more stylised I found it easier to adapt each position to an approximation rather than a carbon copy. The results weren't half bad, either. :3
I thoroughly enjoyed both the books. AND I'd still love to animate both of them, closer to the story in the books - the book characters were extremely charming and loveable in their own way. Maybe I'll do some fanart first and foremost, just so that people will be aware that it's so much more than just Disney!

I feel my Saluki is still stylized, but I'm a control-freak when it comes to anatomy. x) I looked at other artists' quadruped animation projects of dogs, and though the walking movement was right for the individual character, the anatomy made me shudder on some.
I knew there were many movements when it came to running and such, but I didn't realize how hard it could be to try and get them all down. x_x Before this personal project, I had only done a few full-scale animations, one being a post-it flip book of a running dog breaking a leash I did in the 7th grade (no telling how horrid the anatomy was. XD) and a walking thing I did of a pug that just does not look right to me about a year and a half ago ([link] ) . Other than that, I've done simple animation such as tail-wagging for tags, which even getting the correct movement of that is hard! But I've found out that for my little tag sales, animation does the best, so I stick to it. x) I'd like to get a working scanner (you would think that out of the 3 I have, including the one I spent $21 off Ebay, I'd be able to get one to work on this computer) so I can scan all my frames and animate them, as I'm rather proud with how the individual frames turned out except 1, which looked a bit small.
That would be awesome if you did-- I do wish people knew more of the Dalmatian story than just what Disney made it out to be. Though Disney is great, there is so much more to it! I want to do a picture of the 101 Dalmatians-- Pongo, Missis and their 15 pups, Perdita and Prince and their 8 pups, and then the rest. And, er, the sequel is The Starlight Barking, not Twighligt. The disney influence again! (You'd think I'd remember, since the cover has stars on it
) It would be quite the project, but fun to do, and great practice.

Well the horse I was animating was... very cartoony. Lots of round shapes and curves, I love drawing them so it was great. I had to work to keep her toony proportions and not make her proportioned like the real horses I was referencing! Though I will say - I do believe the best kinds of stylisation comes when the artist really understands his/her subject matter in real life. :3 I'm still working on my own animal animations, they're not easy! heck animation is just really tedious and difficult anyway. but heck, it's also very fun. xD;
I like that pug! considering that you haven't taken classes and such I think you did well. Eh well - the more you practice the better you get, I suppose. A good foundation in drawing and anatomy helps a great deal too. I hope you get that scanner, I'd like to see more animations from you.
Maybe when I'm home for the summer and have the books with me, I could reread them and maybe draw some BOOK fanart! That would be a lot of fun.

Okay, I thought you would've but I thought I'd ask =].
Yeah, I always thought that was a bit odd. I don't know much about Dalmatians, but I don't think that the popular 'all black' ears and then scanty spotting on the rest of the body would've flown in the ring in RL, haha.
Really? I've been meaning to actually read it for a few months now. The movie was a favourite of mine when I was younger, along with all those Disney classic xDD, but I haven't watched it since our VHS broke and couldn't play all our old tapes.
