Description
"German Springback" bound with 90(ish) pages, gold edged and round-cornered. (All by hand! No fancy edge-cutters for me. Trusty scalpel and a cotton reel.)Covered in hand-dyed chamois leather. Yip, that is the soft thin yellow leather you clean your car with.
Hand-embriodered head-bands of gold and green thread. Hand-painted end papers.
Green velvet marker ribbon. Raised circle on the cover, surrounding a knotwork design in gold (yes, I created that too).
12 cms wide
15 cms high
2.5 cms thick
This was an extremely time-consuming and intensive book, not only because of the type of binding, but because I did everything I possibly could do myself.
A Springback tutorial can be found here: [link]
Also, I highly recommend trying out chamois as a covering material. It is soft, supple, cheap, easy to work with, and feels good.
A few tips:
- Wash it really well first. Soak it completely and wash it thoroughly with gentle soap. Rinse well, wring out and hang up to dry out of direct sunlight.
- And, it is easier, when gluing chamois to your book, to lay the glue on the board, not the chamois.
I loved creating this book, it was an absoloute joy. And I'm glad I went for the knotwork on the cover. I taught myself the art years ago, and have gotten away from it lately, so it was good to create that quick knot. I think it is pretty.
And for the curious, my design page for this book: [link]
Oh, also, This type of book is fun to make, and quite easy, but the tutorials I have seen can be unnecessarily confusing. I've been thinking about creating an easier-to-follow tutorial for a book of this type. Let me know if you would be interested in something like that, and if enough people do, I'll put one together.
Lovelove.

I meant I would follow the tutorial you used to try and do one for me, not exactly the same ^^
bu wow, that one you did is really awesome! I wish I was able to do knotwork too to decorate my books.....
I have to say your books are awesome jewels.
those could be in any store and cost at least a hundred euro!!! or be in any fantasy film!!!
I look forward to be able to make books half the beauty of yours!

No worries.
I'm actually considering NOT doing a tutorial... just as there are so many already available around the place if someone looks hard enough.... and I like to get people thinking *grin*. There is nothing quite like figuring it out for yourself to learn a good lesson or two.
Knotwork is not that difficult, by the way. It just takes a little practice to get your head around the basics. THE book: [link] , is an invaluable resource.
*grin* Some books I charge a fair price for, yes.

Beautiful clean, rounded edges, and I love how the chamois looks as though it would feel. Yay!

You are an amazing craftsperson! I have been to a couple bookbinding shows here and there in northern California, and your work shines by far over them. I have seen elaborate japanese books but somehow they seemed cold next to yours.

I have no knowledge whatsoever in the creating of such mirabilia. However, the word "mirabilia" is what fits here exactly: an example of "marvels that inspire wonder," something really beautiful and touching. Maybe I should thank Tolkien for branding elaborate celtic knots into what modern people think to be the classical fiction elven culture, for they look wholesome, like a game of sun and shadows on the forest floor, so old and yet so vivid. You have made a piece of "that fragile world" come alive here ... I love it. And all these inviting white pages, waiting to be filled with dreams and reflections ...
