The rest of this project involves me putting the design on a T-shirt and a mug, so I'm thinking I'll just fix up the top one and use it for the shirt. :U

Actually, that was the product of a conversation with my mother. I showed her the first squid and, because my brother skateboards and she likes to think she's up to date with these kinds of things, she said "IT'S NOT FIERCE ENOUGH! SKATEBOARDERS ARE EDGY AND FIERCE!!"
So I was like NEEDS MOAR FIERCE.
Thus eyebrow.

I wish I got to do cool stuff like this in 2D design. ;A; I just got to draw the same thing over and over fifty billion times.
Uh I think maybe it'd be cool if on the final, the smoke came in front of the octopus in some places. Like depending on how you lay out the final design, maybe it could overlap some tentacles.

Skateboard design wise you can do two very cool things with this kind of machine. You can have a psuedo-symmetrical design with the head in the middle and having the tentacles and smoke wisping about the sides, maybe not exactly the same but similar. You could go really graphic with that. The smoke could be an interacting background of sorts.
The other way would to have one or many looking like they're swimming on the board Again kind of with the smoke acting like the background and foreground. They could even make a crazy pattern if you did it right.
Either way I would jazz up the form of the machine a little. You could spice up the "head" a little or the "neck" part underneath that looks like a flamboyant collar. Adding small detail.s I mean, I can tell this one is sketchy and you would clean up whatever would be the final product, but you know, just little tweaks would probably fix it. The only thing that's bugging me is where the "tentacles" or "arms" are coming from, i dunno, it just doesn't seem to be as whimsical or something is with it that makes me look at it sort of awkwardly. It doesn't flow right with the rest of the design.

All excellent suggestions. Since it's just a prelim sketch, I'm going to try harder to make the neck-frill-thing look rounder, or maybe I'll find some other way to address that issue.
I think I'm going to place the head part on either the far right or far left side of the board and have the tentacles going in the opposite direction. I would have placed it in the middle, but 2D design is all about "CENTERING = BAD!" for some reason, harhar.

They usually are, it's funny because they want you to think outside of symmetry most of the time but with a skateboard the best look is usually focused in the middle, long way or short way. It's like limited room. All my teachers so far have been like "DO NOT CENTER EVER." I had one project in my 2-D class that involved centering, and that was like a "2 sides" project and only one thing was allowed to be in the middle.
Yeah, the neck frill is an unusual issue sort of. It's like, it needs to work it can work but it's just being a douche.

Well this is just a preliminary concept sketch. The final sketch will probably look a lot different and be a lot more refined. I just liked it because it gave me an excuse to use the singular prisma marker I own, haha XD
