Description This is an illustration I did for an exhibition at uni where the students taking part were from our uni and another in Japan. I thought there might be a trip to Japan involved. there was not.

They didn't really get it though anyway probably because the interpreter didn't get it, its a very english sort of thing to be going on, but they really liked the image. Basically its me when i was little saying I want to go to the Moon, but my mum isn't really listening and is moaning I'm not going to the moon til i finish my tea...or maybe it only makes sense to me! I kept to black and white, just because I hadn't done that for ages! The theme was Places and Spaces we'd never been, so I looked at obviously the Moon but also thinking of imagination and worlds in worlds and stuff. Like the woodlouse his world is within our world...and stuff

WAAAAAH I was just checking my account this morning, scrolled down and there it is on the Daily Deviations, how exciting!!

Thanks most of all to Sarah for suggesting it Go and check out her work! Do it now!

Thanks for faves of course, i'm so happy!

haha. "vegetables" might have made it a little more universally sympathetic then "tea" but, it's still pretty funny.

yeah i know what you mean but vegetables is a very long word to fit in the space!! lol

but to be fair that's what i would be told, it was always just tea, but i guess as an artist you have to consider your audience further in terms of things like that, esp with the guys at the exhibition coming from Japan and such

It reminds me of a comedy bit I saw. It was like,

I've seen kids be ignored like this and it breaks my heart. Dreams are to be nurtured!

I wanted to go to the moon. My parents didn't discourage me. But we had a job counselor visit the school. He and all the kids in the room laughed. I said "Your job is to advise me. Do your job!" He got a look of "oh shit!" on his face and gave me advice. Unfortunately that advice was discouraging since it required me to go into the military. Also my nearsightedness pretty much ruled that future out. Sigh!

BTW I didn't see the bugs as creepy. They are more like companions to a child. They are small. And they don't judge you.

dreams are certainly to be nurtured!! Sounds like you put that job guy in his place tho..maybe some-day you can go to the moon without all military training n stuff...ah one day!

i was obsessed with bugs, especially woodlice/pill bugs like the one sin the pic, i just thought they were the greatest things ever! I still find them wonderful now and rescue them out of the bathroom! XD

Those pill bugs remind me of trilobites, the dominant animal life form years ago. OK, more than 500 million years ago, but who's counting? They were cool. I wish we could bring them back.

Yeh, like dinosaurs! Love 'em! I'd be so in favor of bringing them back like in Jurassic Park. (And I think it will happen, despite the nay-sayers.) But I agree there are some really cool stuff still around. I remember seeing a jellyfish display at a nearby aquarium. They were gorgeous!!! It took my breath away. And those are common critters.

it's insane what's out there. I love going to the Natural History Museum in London where they have a life size model of a blue whale and i just look at it and think "oh my god this massive thing is just swimming round" lol and it's just so cool!! Imagine dinosaurs back...wow!! I know they're not as big as blue whales but they weren't hidden in the ocean...altho there were some amazing real life sea monsters in those times. I saw a programme about the giant squid and it was huge when they found a dead one...and said it was a small one!! Sailors can't have made sea monsters up when there big squids like that swimming round with big claws in the suckers on their tentacles..scary but so amazing!

I've never been to Europe (other than an overnight stop-over in Rome). Of course the reputation of the Natural History Museum in London is stellar. Maybe someday. For now I get by with closer museums. A few years ago I was able to visit the Smithsonian in Washington DC several times. Wonderful! And despite several days of exploration I still wanted more.

Squids are very interesting for another reason, their eyes. I don't know if all of them do, but at least some see in 7 colors. We only see in 3! I'm envious. Not only that, but if you look at the structure of the mammalian eye, it's screwed up. The nerve bundle exits the cones and rod into the light path. That's why we have a blind spot. The nerve bundle has to pass back out of the eye to get to where it needs to go.

Squid eyes do it right. The nerve bundle is on the back side of the eye. As a result their eyes are more sensitive and they have no blind spot. Much better. People talk about the miracle of our eyes. But compared to squid eyes ours look like a mistake.

I just added you to my watch list. Our conversation has been nice. That's usually my criteria for watching.

I would be pleased and flattered if you would also watch me.

Wow I didn't know that about their eyes, 3 colours is amazing enough but 7... that's incredible!! And definitely better constructed with no blind spot, those guys are definitely watching everything. fascinating!

the museum in London is amazing but then I haven't been to many other around the world, if i'm abroad I always try to find that sort of thing though, would love to go to the Smithsonian.

There's a small and very bizarre collection at the main zoo in Amsterdam, they obviously operate as a zoo first so it's a quite old fashioned and strange collection...lots of pickled animals in jars... not something i agree with much but it's an old fashioned technique and its hardly used now to be fair so have no problem looking at it. It's interesting to see. There was also a very freaky conga eel in their small aquarium there. It looked like a dead dolphin and genuinely freaked me out, the way it was just hanging in the water and the shape, and its markings made it look like a dead dolphin til you looked very closely and saw gills and its real eyes. crazy

Thanks for the watch, will certainly be adding you onto mine
