Description
My second attempt at using acrylics, this time on canvas rather than paper. It is probably finished insofar as I can see no further possibilities. A good learning however, I note that it is easier to use the biggest brush practical even for quite small details, also don't skimp on the paint -- when I started I was being really sparing with the paint and obviously it doesn't spread and flow.Because I keep turning the picture as I work on it I tend to add from the orientation it is in at the time so there is no genuine "this way up" --- this is not intentional, just a really bad habit I have developed and means there is a lack of focus.
However siobhan68.deviantart.com/ has very kindly framed all views so what you see is a collaborative effort.

I've just spent some time looking at these. It's very interesting because different parts of the picture jump out at you depending on which one you look at. I would have assumed before trying this that any part that jumped out at you would do so from any angle: that its 'eye-catchingness' would be orientation independent, but that isn't the case. It makes me want to try this with all my favourite pictures. If I did so I think I would need to have 4 copies side by side like this, because you need to be able to look from one to another quickly. Nice one.

Glad you like it. It wasn't planned like that, it's just that I was aware of it more with this one than my others. I'm guessing that it's due to the fact that because I'm pretty much struggling with using these paints that I'm spending more time than usual on a particular viewpoint. Really can't master the smooth gradient yet.

Wonderful painting, I am even more appreciative of it after reading in the description that this is your second time using acrylics!
I find myself being drawn to the two on the right; they spark my imagination the most. To me the top one looks like an underground forest below an industrial setting and the bottom one looks like a landscape with a pool of water. I love that everyone will interpret them in different ways.
Do you have an idea in your mind of the finished piece when you paint these or do you sort of see where it takes you?

That's so kind, thank you and thanks for the favourite. The first one was on top of pastels on paper but the paint really dried too fast hence my attempt at a canvas. It is really great to think that no two people will see the same in all four panes, stimulus rather than statement, albeit purely accidental.
The canvas had a picture in black grey and white on it before I started so I needed to cover that up. I used the paints I had to roughly cover it, mostly raw umber and burnt sienna (they're the only two I have in large tubes the rest are small so didn't want to waste them) and then started to fill in the shapes that I saw. I genuinely never know where anything is going until it is done. I've started painting on it again and discovered an elephant -- top right panel bottom center, the back and ear of an elephant.

I see the elephant
Thanks for sharing your process, it sounds like such a fun and spontaneous way to work.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you create next!

Kerry, do you use any mediums with your acrylic or just the paint or a little water? I can't seem to get just the right consistency -- I possibly overwork things.

Hi, no just a little extra water to get the consistency \i am after. The great things about acrylics is that watered down they are like water colours. Left thick like oils. There are mediums that are always worth playing with. When painting with acrylics \i paint layers and work on horizons. Looking at your painting, it appears you are already working layers. I have some hints on horizons that \i think you would have fun with. I will put something together for you and send it over. Again you are a natatural with amazing raw and wild talent. Can't wait to see how this evolves with you.
Cheers,
\k

Thank you for that. Yes, the layers seem to be a way of letting a previous coat show through and give quite subtle shading and also change colours. Just started experimenting with neat paint and a square brush on the back of the previous canvas although that isn't finished yet. First thing I noticed is that the paint gets gluey and stiff very quickly. Today,s task is to create a rudimentary table easel, because of glare on the paint I am presently holding the canvas in my left hand and painting with my right which is one reason for my constant turning of the picture and I think an easel would be much better. Even though these canvases are only 14 inches square, I have the feeling that I could use bigger brushes, biggest I have right now is a square one which is slightly less than a half inch. What size brushes do you use/recommend?
Update, namtar57.deviantart.com/art/1-… . I think I must be blessed with a recessive retard gene, yesterdays excitement was discovering I could create new colours on my palette (tupperware lid) rather than on the canvas as I've been doing; I ended with an orangey salmon pink, thats not what I planned, its just what I got, but endless possibilities.

Hi, I have a several common brushes. Trying to think of the best way to get you some info...think I will do a really simple painting showing some tricks and tips you may find helpful via a series of pics. Likely take me some time to pull off so don't worry if it is a week or so. I work long hours so don't have enough time for art. Keep painting...your work will go to a whole new level. A bigger canvas by the way only means more work. I can put the same amount of detail in a 2x2 canvas as an equal work on a 4x4 canvas. Only diff is that the 4x4 can take allot more time to complete with the extra territory. They are more dramatic when seen in-person, however that is a rare event these days. Most views are electronic so size really isn't an issue...
Cheers and talk soon.

I think it's great with those different orientations. Each may give a bit different feelings and ideas. It's creative and spontaneous Great work with acrylics!
