After three or so years of attemps I was finally able to get some close shots of wild wolves. It was a great privilege to be in the presence of these elusive creatures.

Through all the times I've been to Yellowstone, I have actually never seen a wolf. It surprises how close you were able to get to one! And as most have already pointed out, the eyes are amazing.

You always read about how an animal's coat helps it blend in with its surroundings, but sometimes it's just hard to picture. I think this is beautiful in showcasing a wild animal in its natural environment, the colors match so well you can't say they belong anywhere else.

Wolves are such beautiful and mysterious animals.
can you believe that they are being killed?
or at least that's what i heard.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nightweaver20XX In reply to SinisterAlex [2009-05-06 17:24:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, unfortunately grey wolves are being shot from helicopters in Alaska and some Midwest states on a regular basis, because they pose a direct threat to ranchers/farmers. But killing them won't solve anything... you can't kill them all, and if you do, Man will be responsible for yet another species extinction, just in the name of convenience for us. It's not easy to keep wolves away from livestock, and it's only natural for them to seek out prey, and what's easier than domesticated cattle, etc. in a pen? Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin supports their slaughter, and that sickens me personally. Such ignorance, and such an inability to try to find alternative, more humane solutions.

Ugh i know, i heard about how shes trying to get them all killed. That is just the worst. It really sickens me as well. They killed some pups too i hear.
I don't understand why the farmers don't just put up an electric fence?
Or have they tried that already?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nightweaver20XX In reply to SinisterAlex [2009-05-07 16:54:38 +0000 UTC]

I really don't know many details about it; I probably would if I was from Alaska.

Try here: [link]

Electric fences seem like a viable option but they probably cost a lot of money and likely have side-effects to the livestock.

SinisterAlex In reply to Nightweaver20XX [2009-05-08 19:38:02 +0000 UTC]

Electric fence outside, another fence and then another fence. People would just rather go for the more easy solution which is also the most fucked up and disturbing one. I read up on it yesterday, and they are throwing a kind of gas into their dens to kill the pups, and they also put traps outside the dens to kill them.

this is wonderful do you ever get worried of how close you are to them (bears and wolves) or they don't bother you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nate-Zeman In reply to kkool [2009-05-04 20:49:34 +0000 UTC]

well you should make sure to always use long telephoto lenses when doing any kind of wildlife photography. But as long as you keep your distance and respect the animal youre photographing its pefectly safe.

This is a gorgeous shot! I went to Yellowstone over Christmas break and got to see some of the wolves. There were two of them eating an elk carcass beside the road from I think the Hayden pack. I have some pictures, but I didn't take them personally.

Is that why his/hers eyes are golden? (joke from Twilight) What did he/she eat some rabbits? Was the wolf with family or a pack? Sorry for all the questions I really like wolves and I have two dogs.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Iamidaho In reply to valleyofthewind [2009-05-04 04:42:33 +0000 UTC]

Most wolves in a pack are 'family' although some will be invited into the pack that are loners as well. So anytime you hear the word wolf pack, you can think of wolf family.
The wolf had just eaten a female elk they had killed the night before,
all wolves have beautiful citrine colored eyes, see them in person in the wild and they will entrance you forever.

i love the wolf, but, sometimes it makes me sad when i see them kill a rabbit or deer or another beautiful creature. but i remind myself, that's just the circle of life. it's the only way that the wolf can live. anyway, humans are the same way.
gosh i really like this picture
