This is the False Kiva Ruin. Located in an undisclosed location in a remote section of Canyonlands National Park. You won't find this spot on any map, or in any books. Chances are anyone who's been there won't tell you where it is. The location is kept quiet because of its remote and rugged location. There is no practical way to protect these fragile cultural resources. It's sad to say, but there are always those who don't respect these irreplaceable locations, and have to ruin the fun for everyone else.

This site is called "False Kiva" because many people falsely believe the main round structure to be a ceremonial kiva room. These were actually common shelters for ancestral Puebloan people living in this area around A.D. 1200. A partial excavation in 1986 proved it was only used for daily activities like cooking and sleeping.

This is truly an amazing place to experience. It's the quietest place I've ever been. Standing in this alcove high up in a sheer canyon wall, it's not hard to imagine the people that inhabited this place long ago.

This was a really tricky image to make. I used a circ. polarizer and two stacked grad nd filters to try to even out the exposure.

Beautiful!
Isn't this near St. George? I kinda recognized some things in the distance. I used to live there but have yet had the chance to go exploring.

There are many sights to see in Canyonlands, I went there once, but without a 4wd or time to hike, we didn't get to see places such as this. Great work.

Thanks for working so hard and capturing the shot perfectly. The depth of focus is amazing.
As much as I'd love to go there and experience this myself I love that you've kept the location hidden.

Stunning. I feel as if I am at cliff's edge ready to soar through the land of the gods. The composition gives the viewer a feel of looking into something special, the clarity of both the ruin and the distant clouds are both excellent yet feel different and the image feels deep. Excellent!

I saw a picture taken from exactly the same spot in the newspaper a while ago. Was meant to be the most clear photo of space from earth or something, using special equipment... Something like that.

When did you take it? Because i'm having suspicions about them - not you . We were trying to decide whether it was fake or not at the time hahah.

Tamron uses the same ph0to but, not with the same exposure, in his catologue for his 10-24mm objective. It really is an extraordinary ph0to. Awesome

Nice image Nate and respect for keeping it hidden from the general public. One of my favorite secret little slot canyons was revealed in a travel magazine last month by some f*cking asshole that sent an image and directions to the magazine. I give it 6 months and all the 500 year old trees and rock walls will have graffiti on them sigh. Wish we had a better way of protecting such places.

Nate-Zeman In reply to hougaard [2009-02-14 16:14:29 +0000 UTC]

i know its really too bad. i mean this place isnt that hard to get the directions to if you try, but thats what keeps its safe. if they put this thing on a map and made stairs to it, every fucking tourist would be there trying to stack rocks on the kiva and doing god knows what else
